Industrial and Systems Engineering
The Master's in Industrial and Systems Engineering prepares any engineer to design and improve integrated systems of people, technology, material, information and energy. As companies adopt management philosophies with a focus on continuous improvement and product quality to survive in the competitive world market, the need for Industrial and Systems Engineers is growing.
Students are provided with a varied selection of courses in four key areas.
- Required ISE Professional Courses: select 3 courses from a list of 5 including Statistical Quality Analysis, Human Factors, and Foundations of Systems Engineering.
- ISE Depth Area Courses: select 2 courses from a list of 19 ISE courses including Computer Simulation of Discrete Event Systems, Lean Principles and Application, Robotic Systems, and e-Commerce and ERP.
- ISE Elective Courses: select 2 courses from over 150 courses offered in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering.
- Theory Course: select 1 course from a list of 5 including Statistical Methods in Engineering and Systems Optimization and Design.
Many engineers with a Master’s in ISE have their undergraduate degree in a different field of engineering. Thus, admission is open to engineers with an undergraduate degree in any field of engineering - Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Civil, etc. No make-up courses are required.
Many engineers working full-time enroll in the ISE M.S. program on a part-time basis since all courses are offered in the evening, and some courses are also available online. Students may enter the program at any time of the year and begin their classes in either September, January or May due to the flexible nature of the course requirements.
Industrial and Systems Engineers focus on solving problems from a system-level perspective, which includes people, machines, materials, energy, technology, information and software. Industrial and Systems Engineers must design solutions that consider all of a system’s components so that everything works together to improve overall system performance.
As companies adopt management philosophies of continuous productivity and quality improvement to survive in the increasingly competitive world market, the need for Industrial and Systems Engineers is growing. Why? Industrial and Systems Engineers are the only engineering professionals who are trained as productivity and quality improvement specialists. They are leaders in six sigma and lean systems initiatives. The Industrial and Systems Engineer is synonymous with systems integrator – a big-picture thinker who takes what exists today and conceptualizes what should exist in the future.
A lot of engineers in non-ISE fields become disillusioned with the engineering profession because they get involved in minutiae or they end up on a CAD machine all the time and they never get out in the operating environment. ISE provides an opportunity for a challenging career working with people where you can have a direct impact on the success of an organization.
