Auditing Courses

A student who wishes to audit a class must obtain written permission from the instructor on an  audit form. The audit form must be turned into the Office of the Registrar by the end of late registration. See the current undergraduate catalog for additional information.

Competency Credit

Undergraduate: To register for competency credit, students must submit a Competency Examination Form to the Office of the Registrar. Forms are to be filled out and signed by the student and by the department chairperson, dean or director of academic units offering the course. Registration is completed through the Office of the Registrar by the end of the late registration period. The competency exams must be taken within the first six weeks of the term. For additional rules governing competency credit, consult the appropriate university catalog.

Graduate: Competency examinations are offered by some departments and with the approval of The Graduate School. They can be used to update Oakland University credit that is beyond the six-year time limit. Students should consult their advisers for specific information and must register and pay charges during the normal registration period; students also must complete the Competency Examination Form. The examination must be taken not more than six weeks after the close of registration.

Course Load

Students typically need 12 credit hours as an undergraduate student to be considered full time. (Graduate students are considered full time at eight credit hours.) If you have specific concerns related to insurance, financial aid or housing, you should consult with the appropriate office for details. Policies and individual situations can vary. Beyond official status as a full-time student, undergraduate students normally take anywhere between 12 and 16 credit hours each semester. A 16-credit course load will help keep you on track for graduation in four to five years. If you are thinking about taking more or less than that, consider talking to your academic adviser

Graduate students registering for more than 12 credits for a fall, winter or summer semester must have written authorization from their adviser to do so.

Repeating Courses

Students may repeat courses for grade improvement purposes. A maximum of three attempts is allowed. Unless the course is designated as repeatable for credit, the grade earned in a subsequent enrollment will replace the earlier grade regardless of whether the new grade is higher or lower than the previous grade. Only the last grade assigned in a course will be calculated in the grade-point average. Students planning to repeat a course should check with their academic adviser. If you are repeating an Oakland University course, you must retake it at Oakland University. You can not take an equivalency of the course at a different institution.
