Medical Laboratory Sciences Combined Program

Advance your career potential by enrolling in Oakland University’s Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s in Medical Laboratory Sciences degree program. Interact with graduate students, save time and money, apply for graduate assistantships, develop a more profound preparation for the field of medical laboratory science and increase your potential for management careers.

Undergraduate students currently enrolled in Oakland’s B.S. in Clinical and Diagnostic Science with a specialization in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program are eligible to apply. If accepted, you will be granted deferred admission to the Master of Science in Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences program and begin graduate courses during the first semester of your senior year. This helps accelerate the completion of a graduate degree.

Advising Apply

Complete the graduate-level cross-listed elective courses during your senior year, followed by your clinical rotation and one additional year of coursework at the graduate level. 12 credits of graduate courses applied to the bachelor’s degree may be counted also for graduate credit through the combined program.

Courses in the final year of study are designed to enhance your educational goals and objectives, while simultaneously reviewing current literature in the field of study and completing a discipline-specific project in your capstone course. 

Curricular Requirements

Students seeking the Combined B.S./M.S. degree plan must complete a minimum of 120, including the following requirements:

  1. Meet the university general education requirements

    In order to graduate on schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

    Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundation, Exploration, Integration, Writing, U.S. Diversity and Capstone. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

    Note

    A student with a junior standing may apply to the Combined B.S./M.S. program through the graduate office. Qualified applicants will be given delayed admission to the MLS program. (Full, formal admission will not take place until the student successfully completes his or her undergraduate degree). While there is no GPA requirement for admission to the program, students must maintain an average of 3.0 GPA throughout the curriculum.

    A student accepted into the program continues his or her undergraduate degree with the substitution of four graduate courses as shown above.

    Please note that students must be accepted into the program before taking any graduate level courses. If a student in the program has successfully graduated with a B.S. degree, he or she is fully admitted to the graduate MLS program.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 13 percent in the next decade, resulting in about two million new jobs in that time period. Additionally, employment of clinical laboratory technologists and technicians is expected to increase by seven percent. 

Average Salary

As reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for a bachelor’s-level Clinical Laboratory Technologist and Technician is $65,000 per year while graduate-level Medical Scientists average $95,310 annually. Compensation for management leadership positions varies in range.
