Oakland University’s Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Rhetoric program recently earned a Writing Program Certificate of Excellence from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the national organization for collegiate writing programs.

OU’s program was one of only two undergraduate writing majors to gain such recognition this year, according to program director Jim Nugent, who accepted the award this month at the CCCC annual convention in Houston. Established in 2004, the award honors a small number of writing programs annually, based on a wide range of criteria tied to program quality for faculty and students.

Dr. Nugent said OU’s program stands out due to its dedicated faculty and well-rounded curriculum. The 40-credit major offers tracks in professional writing, writing for digital media and writing studies.

“Our professional writing track and writing for digital media track prepare students to be top-notch writers in a variety of fields,” Dr. Nugent said. “Students in our writing studies track are performing original research and presenting at national conferences. We strive to create an environment in which students can pursue their interests and achieve their goals.”

This award is part of a series of continued successes for the Department of Writing and Rhetoric. The department’s first-year writing program received a similar award from CCCC in 2013, recognizing its excellence in teaching composition.
