Biography
I joined Oakland University in the fall of 2017, as an Assistant Professor of Wellness and Health Promotion. I earned a B.S. in Wellness, Health Promotion & Injury Prevention from Oakland University, as well as a M.S. and Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  For seven years, I held the position of assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball programs at the University of Illinois, while conducting research, teaching, and pursuing my degrees.  While at the University of Illinois I had the pleasure of working on multiple health and exercise based research projects including: recruit firefighter fitness and the impact individual fitness had on live fire performance and cognition, and my doctoral thesis was a study examining affective change during passive (motor driven) cycling in individuals with spinal cord injuries.  Much of the research on this topic suggests that passive exercise should be utilized as a way to slow muscle atrophy post-injury.  However, I examined the use of passive exercise as a placebo for active exercise. The research I intend to pursue at Oakland University involves the exploration of the impact of health promotion and wellness in individuals with disabilities, both visible and invisible; a field that is currently lacking in information, but growing in the number of individuals who can benefit from continued findings. My research focus on determining the mechanisms underlying effectiveness of exercise in improving affect/emotion, as well as inclusive wellness for individuals with disabilities.

In my spare time, I enjoy getting out and being physically active, relaxing with friends, and cuddling up with a good book, or research article, and my 3-legged cat, Mr. Pickles.
