Currently, assistantships for doctoral candidates and master’s students in the Department of Counseling require 20 hours per week and you must be a student in the program.

As part of the Behavioral Health Workforce Development program, up to 50 Easterseals MORC employees per year will receive a 10% tuition discount to attend Oakland University if they pursue an advanced degree in social work or counseling. If you are a current Easterseals MORC employee and are interested in applying for the student discount for the counseling program, please complete and submit the Easterseals MORC Tuition Discount form.

Easterseals-MORC tuition reduction applications must be received 6 weeks prior to the class start date of the semester that the student is applying to receive a reduction for.

Most people who choose to pursue a degree in counseling have a strong desire to help others work through the challenges and difficulties of life.

Some people have had good experiences in therapy and want to help others in the way that they were helped. Others have had interactions with people who were in crisis and discovered that they enjoy the challenges and benefits helping individuals through difficult times. Some have been told that they are a good listener and comfortable to talk to and decide to use those skills in a field that feels enriching.

Counseling is a diverse field that allows you to work in areas that interest you. School counselors work with children or teens. Counselors at the university level help college students. Counselors can also work with people in the community through agencies or private practice. Some counselors prefer working with individuals, while others enjoy working with couples or groups. Whatever population a counselor decides to work with, the counseling relationship is often rewarding and growth promoting for both individuals and counselors.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says, “Employment of substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors is projected to grow 23 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth is expected in this occupation as people continue to seek addiction and mental health counseling services. Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors experienced an increase in demand due to the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on many individuals’ mental health."

The choice of where to obtain the education to become a Counselor is as important as the choice to become a counselor. Oakland University’s Counseling Programs are CACREP accredited and offer excellent training through their Master’s and Doctoral Degrees, as well as through the various specializations.
