Art History

Art history is an ideal curriculum for students who wish to investigate a broad range of humanistic disciplines. The visual arts are studied in their historical context in terms of the cultural, economic, philosophical, political, religious, social and technological conditions that determine content and form.

The department also emphasizes critical thinking, writing and visual analysis of individual works of art. The art history program provides both majors and non-majors with a thorough introduction to the visual arts of both Western and non-Western cultures throughout history.

Art Gallery Events

All students enrolled in 200- and 300-level art history and studio art classes are required to attend at least one lecture or event at theĀ Oakland University Art Gallery (OUAG) sponsored either by the OUAG or Department of Art and Art History. Check with your instructor for details.
