Autism Certificate (Endorsement) for Teachers

The ASD Certificate  is an 18- to 24-month, part-time program designed for individuals who currently have or are eligible to receive a teaching certificate in Michigan, and who wish to receive state certification to teach individuals on the autism spectrum. All credits may be applied to the  M.Ed. in Special Education , which can be earned with as few as 17 additional credits (approximately 4 courses), depending on prior credentials.   The program is currently offered at several on-ground locations including Macomb, Oakland University's main campus, as well as online.
If you are not a teacher and are not intending to pursue teacher certification, but wish to learn about our Certificate in Autism - Multiple Disciplines program, please visit the following link:  View Multiple Disciplines.
Plan of Study
  • View Advanced: This option requires an individual to hold a prior special education endorsement in Michigan
  • View Basic: This option is for general education teachers and only requires an individual to have a valid MI teaching certificate
Practicum/Student Teaching   |    View Practicum Information
In partial fulfillment of the requirements to earn this credential, the Michigan Department of Education requires that candidates complete a minimum of 180 clock hours in a supervised practicum experience teaching students with autism spectrum disorders.    The practicum is offered as the final experience required for K-12 certification in ASD.    The specific nature of the experience will be individually determined at the time of approval of the practicum request.
