Participant Eligibility

Participant Eligibility

Project Upward Bound (PUB) is funded to serve students who have demonstrated in secondary school that they have the academic potential to succeed in college.  PUB provides Service Scholarships valued at more than $4,500.00 per participant per year. Being a member of PUB is like having a scholarship because there is no cost to members. Students who wish to join and benefit from the program must meet the following eligibility requirements.
  1. Attend a target school*(a-c below) at the time of admission AND
    a. Pontiac High School or International Technical Academy
    b. Pontiac Academy for Excellence High School
    c. Oak Park Freshman Institute or High School
  2. Have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a regular curriculum track OR
  3. Be non-proficient in math and/or reading on Michigan’s proficiency exam AND
  4. Demonstrate a need for PUB’s services (through school records and interview) AND
  5. Custodial Parents/Guardians have no bachelor’s degree OR
  6. Household income falls within federal guidelines AND
  7. BE SERIOUS ABOUT BECOMING COLLEGE-READY!!!
*Students may apply for PUB membership when they are in the second semester of 8th grade regardless of the middle school they attend. However, if accepted, admission is finalized only upon confirmed upon providing proof of enrollment at a target school, taking PUB’s pre-assessment, and attending PUB’s new student orientation with a parent.

Partnerships

Students who are PUB members may also participate in other college-readiness programs such as McCree Scholars, Dual Enrollment, Early College, and GEAR UP programs. Applicants must inform PUB of memberships in other academic programs and extra-curricular or community activities to determine whether compatible schedules can be worked out. A student may not participate in more than one Upward Bound project at different locations. However, a participant who moves may transfer to a different project that serves their target school without having to re-qualify.
