M.A.T. In Elementary Education


Oakland University’s Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education (MATEE) program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree and are now seeking a career in teaching. The MATEE program is a 2-year teacher certification program that will prepare individuals for a career in teaching at the elementary or middle school level.

High quality learning experiences ensure that participants are well-prepared to teach, combining teacher education coursework augmented by three field placements in local schools prior to student teaching. The course sequence allows students to be recommended for certification prior to the completion of the master’s degree. At the completion of the MATEE program, students will have earned a teaching certificate (grades K-8), as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.

Additional undergraduate major and minor courses may be required for those individuals whose prior coursework does not fulfill the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) core competencies for a “teachable major and/or minor content area. This coursework must be completed prior to admission to the MATEE program. See transcript review information on the Getting Started tab. Also, successful scores on the MDE teacher education entrance exams are required for admission.

To accommodate working individuals, classes primarily meet two weekday evenings per week until the final semester of student teaching. Courses are taken as a cohort with coursework beginning in the fall semester. Courses in the Oakland County program are held on campus at Oakland University in Rochester and courses in the Macomb County program are held at the Macomb University Center in Clinton Township.


One of the primary benefits of Oakland University's teacher preparation program is field experiences provided in local school districts. Participants receive varied experiences working with school-age children and have an opportunity to apply coursework to the teaching environment as they learn it.

  • Students will complete a minimum of 100 hours of field experience to observe instruction, classroom management strategies, work with students, and implement lessons prior to the student teaching internship. These hours are divided into 3 semesters of approximately 30-40 hours each. Fields are completed within the school-day as weekly half-day visits during the specified semester.
  • Field experiences and your student teaching internship are arranged for you by Oakland University. There are limited after-school and Saturday field experiences therefore working individuals should plan to make accommodations to cover these requirements.
  • Student teaching is 15 weeks full-time in the classroom and includes all school-related activities.
  • VIA by Watermark (http://www.vialivetext.com) is an online assessment tool that every candidate of the initial teacher preparation programs is required to use. Once you are accepted to the program, you will receive an email from the office of Continuous Improvement (sehscic@oakland.edu) that will provide you with information to purchase your account.   • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Improved grades in recent coursework will be considered.
  • A minimum of one teachable major. A transcript review must be done to determine eligibility for the program (see Getting Started tab).
  • Evidence of passing scores on required exams:
    • MDE Basic Skills Requirement (SAT, ACT, PRE, Basic Skills)
    • MTTC Subject Area major/minor tests

There are several steps involved to determine your eligibility for the Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Certification (MATEE) program.  Please follow these steps to make sure you're best prepared for admission: 

1) Transcript Review: Submit a Transcript Review form to MATinfo@oakland.edu.  Within 1-2 weeks, you will receive your transcript evaluation via email from our advising team.  This is a mandatory first step for all applicants.
2) Request an Individual Appointment: When you have you transcript evaluation back, you can request a meeting with the MATEE Program Coordinator. During this meeting, you will learn about the program expectations, class and fieldwork structure, and application process. Click here to make an individual appointment.
3) Complete Prerequisites: Based on your transcript evaluation, you will likely have some prerequisite coursework to complete to fulfill your teachable major or minor. You can work with the SEHS Advising Team to determine when and where to take those classes.  To make an appointment with their office, please contact (248) 370-4182. 
4) Admission to Program: Once you have completed all prerequisite coursework and testing requirements and the online application, you will receive an official admission decision from the Office of Graduate Study.

How To
IMPORTANT: To be eligible for the MATEE program, you must have a transcript review done to evaluate if you have met the prerequisite coursework and all of the state testing requirements. If you haven’t had a transcript evaluation done yet, please do so before starting an application to the program.

Please use this Information Packet to walk you through the application process.
  1. Submit your graduate application using the online graduate application.  To be considered for admission, applicants must begin an application by May 1 for the fall semester.

    1. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (focused on education)
    2. Goal Statement
    3. Felony / Misdemeanor Disclosure form
    4. Experience Working with Children/Youth form
    5. Two Recommendations from individuals in a supervisory relationship to the applicant
    6. Official Transcripts from each college/university you attended. You do not need to provide transcripts from OU. 

  3. Send Official Test Scores to Oakland University:

    2. MTTC Subject Area major/minor tests
