Rationale:

To define the procedures for dismissing a student from the School of Medicine for academic and other reasons.

Scope and Applicability:

All students enrolled in the School of Medicine.

Standard Practice Guideline:

Students who fail to maintain the expected acceptable ethical, professional, technical, academic, or clinical standards, and/or fails to comply with any of the policies, procedures, rules, regulations, ordinances or other requirements of Oakland University (OU), Corewell Health (CH), and the School of Medicine may be subject to dismissal.

Procedures:

At any time, the SPRC can review the overall academic performance and professional behavior of a student and recommend appropriate action, up to and including dismissal. A student who has been dismissed may not be considered for readmission to the School of Medicine.

Examples of conduct that may lead to dismissal include, without limitation, the following:

1. Unsatisfactory Academic Performance: Failure to meet the School of Medicine Standards of Academic Progress as described in OUWB guidelines. Failure to meet these standards includes, without limitation, the following:
   1. Unremediated failures in courses or clerkships that persist after a remediation attempt.
   2. A second failure of the same required course, clerkship or elective.
   3. A failure in a second course, clerkship or elective, even though the previous failure may have been remediated.
   4. Removal from a clinical placement/clerkship at Corewell Health.
2. Inadequate Academic Progress: The SPRC may make the determination that it is impossible for the student to complete the requirements for the MD degree within six (6) consecutive years as specified in OUWB guidelines.
3. Repeated USMLE Step 1 or 2 Failure: Failure to pass any one of the United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE Step 1, 2CK or 2CS) examinations after three (3) attempts.
4. Unprofessional Behavior
   Failure to maintain the professional standards of the School of Medicine, as described in OUWB guidelines which includes any behavior or pattern of behavior that indicates insufficient aptitude, emotional stability, or moral character to successfully practice medicine.
5. Failure to return from a leave of absence on the scheduled date as established by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs or the SPRC.
6. Inability to meet the Technical Standards for the MD Degree.

Definitions:

Dismissal is the permanent administrative termination of a student's enrollment in the School of Medicine.
