Assistant Professor Sanela Martic, of the Department of Chemistry

CBR member Sanela Martic has been awarded a three-year grant for $433,433 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health. Her award (R15GM119053) is for mechanistic studies of anti-tau antibodies effects on tau biochemistry.

This research has critical relevance to public health. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, dementia and tauopathies, remain without a cure. Martic’s project addresses several issues of tauopathies and the role of immunotherapies to identify mechanisms of antibodies-based inhibition. The proposed project will provide a platform for future development of therapeutics for tauopathies, and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Martic leads a group of undergraduates and graduate students in the Department of Chemistry who are working at the chemistry/biology interface.
