Shannon Esselink, M.A. 
Director of Advising Services

Shannon Esselink is the Director of Advising Services in the College of Arts & Sciences. She has been in higher education for over 17 years. Shannon earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Michigan State University and a Master in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. Shannon strives to provide the best advising services for the College of Arts and Sciences students through the numerous committees she serves on in addition to her active daily role in the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office, whether meeting with students, faculty, or staff. 



Ann Selva, M.A. L.L.P.C. 
Assistant Director of Advising Services

Ann Selva is the Assistant Director of Advising Services in the College of Arts & Sciences.  Ann earned an Associates from Oakland Community College, a Bachelor of Art in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University. She has been advising since 2009.  Ann wants to motivate students to reach their goals by working hard, getting involved, and making meaningful connections on-campus.

Matt Prentice is a Professional Academic Adviser who advises all CAS majors and specializes in Music, Theatre and Dance. He earned a Bachelor of Art in Psychology from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University. Matt has been advising students at OU for over 7 years.  Matt wants to encourage students to make the most of their college experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Jim has worked in the academic advising field since 2013.

Meagan Richard earned her Bachelor of Applied Arts in Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University and Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, with a focus in Student Affairs, from Eastern Michigan University.  She believes that the key ingredient to a student's success story is support from faculty and staff.  She encourages students to get involved, on and off campus, to build a solid foundation for their future careers.

Nancy Gursin is a part-time Professional Academic Adviser who advises all CAS majors. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Valparaiso University and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University. Nancy has been advising for over three years at OU.

Cuza University of Iasi, Romania, and earned M.A. in Counseling and Education Specialist from Oakland University. She believes college is a unique transformational experience in one’s life. Through supporting students to discover their own professional and personal path, she encourages them to become leaders in local and global communities.

Katie is a professional academic adviser who advises all CAS majors. She is deeply passionate about serving the OU student population by developing academic success plans, connecting students to campus organizations and resources, and helping students find ways to make the most of their OU college experience. Katie earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication and Master of Arts in English from Oakland University. Katie has also worked at OU for the past five years as a writing consultant at the Oakland University Writing Center and a special lecturer in the departments of Communication and Journalism and Writing and Rhetoric. She is excited to join the CAS advising team to continue working for the university she loves.

Rachel wants to help students navigate their academic path to graduation and future success.

Each Department in the College of Arts and Sciences has faculty advisers who students should also visit. If a student has a question about a particular program, he/she can seek out the faculty adviser in that department.

Some departments have specific faculty that advise students seeking internships.  If you are looking to complete an internship for your major and/or minor, please contact your internship coordinator.

Sheri earned a Degree in Business Administration and spent 15 years in Finance and Operations Management before transitioning to a career in education.  Sheri worked 5 years in K-12 before transitioning to Oakland University in 2013.
