An online training program to help faculty and staff better support student veterans is now available through OU's Veterans Support Services website.

Oakland University’s Office of Veterans Support Services is now offering an online training program to help faculty and staff better understand and assist student veterans on campus.

Created by health simulation company Kognito, the training guides users through a series of virtual scenarios designed to show faculty and staff how to engage and support student veterans in situations involving mental and physical health challenges, academic concerns and transitions between military and civilian life.

The simulations help faculty and staff members understand the challenges that student veterans face and provide examples of how to respond effectively. These include managing group discussions that revolve around veteran-related issues or referring veterans to campus resources such as academic workshops or counseling services.

“It’s very important to be attuned to the needs of our veteran population,” said Eric Wuestenberg, coordinator of OU’s Office of Veteran Support Services. “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from those who have already taken the training. It’s a great learning tool and helps open up a healthy dialogue about how everyone can play a role in creating a supportive environment for veterans on our campus.”

The training module is available on the Veterans Support Services website under the “Training” tab. By completing this 20-minute training session, participants will:

  • be entered into a monthly drawing to win two Pistons tickets.
  • help raise $500 for Oakland University student veterans.
  • help OU gain recognition as a state leader in student veteran initiatives and support training.
  • receive a printable certificate of completion.
