On April 10, 2017 the Michigan Department of Education released a statement that the Professional Readiness Exam (PRE) will be replaced by the SAT (additional information on SAT tab below). The Michigan Department of Education has shared these PRE Phase Out Details.
Additional Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification are required in the subject area and elementary education in order to earn a Michigan Teaching Certificate. Details on tests are available at: mttc.nesinc.com/
- The Michigan Department of Education will continue to accept passing scores on the Professional Readiness Exam (October 2013-September 2017)
- The Michigan Department of Education will continue to accept passing scores on the Basic Skills Test (taken before October 2013)
The PRE consists of three subarea tests - mathematics, reading, and writing. All sections of the test include multiple-choice question. The writing sub test also includes two written constructed-response questions. The passing score for each standard PRE subarea test is 220. A candidate must meet or exceed the passing score on two of the three PRE subtests, and must meet or exceed the Alternative Score on the third PRE subtest according to this table. If a candidate satisfies these requirements they shall be considered to have passed the PRE as a whole.
PRE Subtest Score Equivalencies
Teachers applying for their initial teacher certificate prior to October 1, 2025 may use ACT or Michigan Merit Exam (MME) subtest scores to satisfy related PRE subtest requirements. The ACT English+Writing is a combined score found on The ACT Plus Writing Student Report, or the combined score may be calculated from an online ACT English+Writing score calculator (if taken prior to September 2015). If a teacher candidate didn't take the ACT writing subtest at all, they do not qualify for using this pass measure option.
Pass score equivalencies are listed below.
ACT scores are valid on tests taken between 1989 to September 23, 2017
MME scores are valid on tests taken between March, 2007 - January, 2015.
ACT Equivalencies |
|
| MME Equivalencies |
|
---|---|---|---|---|
Reading | 22 |
| Reading | 1108 |
Mathematics | 22 |
| Mathematics | 1116 |
English+Writing | 22 |
| Writing | 1129 |
Michigan Department of Education has developed PRE Pass Score Alternative. If a teacher candidate has met or exceeded the passing score (or ACT/MME score equivalent) on two of the three PRE subtests, they may use a PRE Passing Score Alternative on the third subtest in order to be considered as having passed the PRE as a whole.

It is highly recommended that candidates meet with their Academic Adviser to review their specific situation.
