sUAS Remote Pilot Certificate

The Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drone) Remote Pilot Certificate Program is specifically designed to provide both basic airman knowledge, hands-on flying skill, and preparation to apply for and pass the FAA small drone remote pilot certification (Part 107 test). Students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in knowledge and operations of a small-unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) through both written and flying skill tests.

Who should attend
The program is ideal for individuals that will be taking on the responsibility for commercial operation of small drones. This may be on behalf of their company or for those individuals interested in starting up their own sUAS related business. There are a variety of commercial uses for small drones, including:

• Delivery - light packages, mail, food
• News reporting – TV channels
• Real estate’s advertisement
• Aerial inspection – roofs, bridges, electrical power lines
• Surveillance & security
• Construction survey
• Movies and media
• Search & rescue, disaster relief
• 3D mapping
• Agriculture
• Hunting
• Sports entertainment


A Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) Certificate of Achievement will be issued to the participants who pass the course and the FAA administered exam.

Course Description

The following course will be conducted in small groups so you will receive personal attention and have your questions answered by instructors.

CEEN 10301 Course: Small Drone Remote Pilot Knowledge & Proficiency

Students will receive hands-on lessons related to owning, flying, and maintaining a small UAS. The flying skills test will require students to fly a basic drone in multiple directions and orientations, take off/ land, and fly through an obstacle course all while demonstrating safety and proficiency.

This course will help students to understand FAA regulations related to the operation of sUAS below 55 pounds, safety procedures and operation, laws, and ethics. It will highlight cases and scenarios related to safety procedures, operations, maintenance, responsibilities, insurance, laws, ethics, and introductory business concepts with sUAS. The regulations to be covered include maintenance and preflight inspection, emergency procedures, aerodynamics and aircraft operations, navigation, crew resource management, aeronautical decision-making, weather theory, reports, and forecasts.

Cost

Course: $900 *A 10% discount is available for OU faculty, staff, & alumni, and groups of 5 of more.   E-mail oupace@oakland.edu for more information. 

Part 107 fee - The online Part 107 test is an additional charge ($160) paid directly to the FAA at the time of testing. Testing for and passing the FAA certification exam is required from the FAA to operate a drone for commercial purposes.

Students must complete the following steps before class to schedule their exam:

Miscellaneous costs:

Register at the FAA Drone Registration page (approx. $5).

Become a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics ($75) to receive insurance coverage and the latest updates.

Each student is required to buy a Blade Nano QX quadrotor (~$50). While students may already have their own more technically advanced drones, the program will teach you how to operate from "the ground up" without the use of fancy equipment and technology. 

Waiver
All attendees must enter a waiver of claim and covenant not to sue agreement, with Oakland University, and instructors for liability.

Prerequisites

Students must

  1. Be sixteen years or older
  2. Have adequate sensory-motor capability to operate sUAS.

Dates: April 5th, 2021 - May 12th, 2021
Times: 6-8pm
Days: Mondays and Wednesdays

From 6-7pm instructors will focus on regulations and other knowledge necessary to successfully pass the FAA Exam and fly a drone safely and legally. From 7-8pm the emphasis will be on hands-on demonstration and practice.

FAA sUAS Remote Pilot Exam
Students will schedule their time slot following the steps below. The exam can be taken after the CEEN 10201 course is completed on Sunday, September 13th, and is a separate fee ($160).
