David A. Stone, Ph.D., has been appointed associate vice president for research and professor of Health Sciences at Oakland University. He is scheduled to begin his new role on August 8.
As the associate vice president for research, Dr. Stone is the chief research officer of the University and will be responsible for coordinating all research-related operations, including both sponsored and internally-funded programs, technology transfer, commercialization of intellectual property, and oversight of compliance activities.
Dr. Stone is a highly accomplished instructor, researcher and administrator with an extensive background in interdisciplinary scholarship. He currently serves as associate vice president for strategic innovation and planning, and as an associate professor of public health in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Northern Illinois University. Previous positions he has held at NIU include associate vice president for research and director of the Office of Sponsored Projects.

Prior to joining NIU, Dr. Stone served as the founding director of the South-East European Research Centre at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and at CITY College in Thessaloniki, Greece; founding associate director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Health Research Center at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston; founder and director of BostonCares for Injured Youth; and director of research and science at the Fenway Community Health Center in Boston.

Dr. Stone obtained a joint bachelor and master of arts degree in interdisciplinary forensic psychiatry, as well as a doctorate in interdisciplinary philosophy and social studies of science and technology, all from Boston University. He also attended Harvard Law School’s Special Student program and completed professional development programs offered by Harvard University and the Society for College and University Planning, and the American Council on Education Fellowship.
With this strong educational foundation, Dr. Stone has built an impressive record of instruction and research work, having filled numerous positions at institutions including NIU, CITY College, American College of Thessaloniki, the University of Sheffield, Tufts University, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, Boston City Hospital and Boston University.
His areas of specialization include philosophy of natural and social science, technology and medicine; ethics; forensic psychiatry; substantivist economics; organizational change; public health; qualitative research methods; risk behavior; youth violence; placebo studies; research development; inter and transdisciplinarity; and research development.
Cumulatively, he has conducted research with more than $40 million in grant support from national, international, and foundation sources, provided research consulting services to several major U.S. universities, organized eight international conferences, and authored more than 100 publications, conference papers, lectures and abstracts.
