Oakland University has been the recipient of national and state-wide awards that showcase the university's commitment to well-being for the entire campus community. Well-being programs and initiatives for both students, faculty, and staff continue to be available year round, and it is because of your support and participation that we are able to achieve such great success. With continued programming, initiatives, and support we hope to maintain the recognition that has been received while continuing to strive for other honors.
Crain’s Detroit Business Michigan’s Healthiest Employer Award
In 2012, Oakland University was named one of Michigan’s Healthiest Employers by Crain’s Detroit Business. The honor comes as a result of the university's commitment to employee health and well-being, as demonstrated by several campus initiatives including free memberships to the Campus Recreation Center for benefits-eligible faculty and staff, and smoking cessation programs. Since the 2012 award, Campus Recreation and Employee Wellness continue to strive for excellence offering a multitude of well-being opportunities for the campus community. Employee usage of the facility remains well above pre-free access numbers, with employees tipping the scales to the majority of participation in Group Exercise classes. Post award, Oakland University has also made the commitment to becoming a Smoke Free campus, in addition to continuing smoking cessation programs and support.

Fit-Friendly Worksite Gold Level
In April 2015, Oakland University was recognized as a Gold Level Recipient of the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksites Recognition program.
The Fit-Friendly Worksites program is a catalyst for positive change. Worksites throughout the nation can be part of the initiative by making the health and wellness of their employees a priority. Oakland University was recognized as a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life. initiative for:
- Offering employees physical activity support.
- Providing/increasing healthy eating options at the worksite.
- Promoting a wellness culture.
- Implementing at least nine criteria as outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.
We are extremely honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life. initiative as a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite. Physical activity and employee well-being are very important priorities here at Oakland University and we encourage all of our employees to participate in any program benefiting their well-being how they see fit.
