The Office of Public School Academies was well represented by Shawna Boomgaard, Manager of Academic Accountability, and Adam LeRoy, Administrative Coordinator for Special Services, who were selected to present at the Annual Michigan Department of Education Fall 2016 School Improvement Conference in Lansing. The conference theme was Teaching and Engaging with Poverty in Mind – A Closer Look at Tools for Engagement.

Shawna and Adam’s presentation was entitled, “No One Is an Island: Connecting Poverty, Neuroscience, and Achievement” and included 86 attendees. Participants used various activities to explore the roles of executive-functioning issues, self-regulation and working memory skills and the influence on student achievement and behavior.
