Student Employment

Pre-College Programs looks for active student leaders with a diverse background to engage with middle and high school students. We staff our office with an Office Assistant, provide a college experience with our Student Mentors, and additional academic support for middle and high school students with Academic Tutors. Summer Employment is available.

Office Assistant

Job Description:
The Department of Pre-College Programs is seeking an office assistant to assist and support staff with multiple programs in the areas of academics, social, and cultural enrichment pre-college programming. The 10-15 hour per week position will begin mid March 2022. The Office Assistant for Pre-College Programs will report directly to the Administrative Assistant. 

Duties:

  • Maintain and manage student files in an organized manner
  • Update hiring paperwork
  • Update training materials for incoming mentors
  • Maintain documents and word processing
  • Handling incoming calls and other communications as needed
  • Creating and entering information into databases as needed.
  • Help organize and maintain office common areas
  • Prepare bulk mailings as needed
  • Maintain Pre-College email
  • Perform general office duties and errands
  • Required to volunteer for Wade McCree and Clinton River Water Festival

Qualifications:
The Office Assistant for Pre-College Programs must be enrolled for the 2021-2022 academic year. Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.), Google Suite (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Forms, etc.), and social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook). Familiarity with Oakland University and its organization, mission commitments, structures and programs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Organization and programming skills
  • Effective multi-tasking
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Previous experience working with pre-college students is preferred
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Must be able to work on projects autonomously but be comfortable with direct but limited supervision.

Student Mentors

Job Description:
Pre-College Programs (PCP) Student mentors are responsible for providing guidance to pre-college students through academic, social, and cultural programming and experiences. PCP Student Mentors also provide ongoing support through mentorship, facilitating campus tours, and outreach. 

Duties:

  • College Day: PCP mentors will assist in our College Day program by giving campus tours, interacting with middle to high school aged students, and facilitating icebreakers. 
  • Residential Program: This program is hosted in the summer months of the year (May-August). PCP mentors will assist with facilitation of the camps by working overnight shifts, facilitating workshops, delivering campus tours, and other duties as needed. 
  • Clinton River Water Festival at OU: PCP mentors are required to volunteer at this event. Students will facilitate different sessions throughout the day. PCP mentors will assist with school groups, the lunch process, and the pizza party for the poster winners. PCP mentors will also assist with set-up and tear-down of the event 
  • The Wade H. McCree Scholarship Program: PCP mentors will assist with the Wade McCree induction ceremony, orientation, the SAT prep program, and overnight college visits held at Oakland University.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA
  • Must attend OU for one full semester prior to employment
  • Must demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must model behaviors that result in establishing and maintaining a positive, respectful mentor relationship with participants
  • Must have the ability to work at least 5 hours a week 
  • Must submit the external application in addition to the Handshake application 
  • Must attend all mandatory mentor trainings held once a month
Academic Tutors

Job Description:
Tutors are responsible for assisting middle and high school students in the Pontiac, Ferndale and Oak Park Preparatory Academy School Districts in the subjects of Math and Reading.

Duties:

  • Hold class sessions during schedule time
  • Provide academic support by utilizing curriculum designed by School District.
  • Provide clarification to homework assignments and course material
  • Provide academic resources to student if needed.

Qualifications:

  • Required 2.75 GPA
  • Minimum of a 2.75 GPA in desired subjects
  • Complete a background check
  • Submit an unofficial transcript
  • Some experience with middle and high school students
  • Schedules are based on availability.
  • Second semester freshman standing or higher
