Social Sushi Detroit Wins Spirit Of Detroit Award

Social Sushi Detroit Wins Spirit Of Detroit Award

OU INC Client Social Sushi Detroit’s Co-founder Jacob “Jay” Rayford received the Spirit Of Detroit Award on Tuesday July, 22. The Spirit Of Detroit Award is presented to individuals, events, or organizations for an outstanding achievement or service to the citizens of Detroit.

Social Sushi Detroit started off as a monthly networking event. The event brought people together and exposed them to new ideas, new places, individuals and community organizations working every day to rebrand the City of Detroit. Through event planning and promotions, Social Sushi has been a driving force in bringing people together and sushi has been observed to be a very social friendly food.

Over time, the founders of Social Sushi Detroit developed a plan to turn the event into a business. Currently, Social Sushi’s goal is to build a restaurant in Detroit. With construction underway in Corktown, the restaurant is focused on maintaining the social aspect of its origin.

While Social Sushi Detroit has seen great success they have learned that starting a business is not easy.

“There are a lot of moving parts and a lot of approval that you need to work through before a business can open and especially before construction can start on a new structure” said Robert “Bub” McDonald, Catering Accounts and Customer Service Trainer “But, we can not believe how much support we have received from individuals and organizations all around the country!”

In collaboration with high school and college students, the restaurant is being built to be like no other. Recycling materials from old building and repurposing them in new spaces, the building is being composed out of shipping containers. The restaurant will be located in front of the old train station in Roosevelt Park. Instead of referring to it as a “Brick and Mortar” building, Social Sushi refers to it as “Steel and Re-Claimed Wood”.

As Social Sushi Detroit continues to build their restaurant in Detroit, look for them to continue leading the way by revolutionizing the networking world.
