Mindfulness Can Help School Administrators Deal with Stress: Workshop June 21

Mon Jun 6, 2016 at 09:00 AM

Challenging budget issues, lack of control, decreasing teacher morale and increasing job complexity are all contributing to higher levels of stress for school administrators. In the 29th annual MetLife Survey of the American Teacher, interviews with 500 Principals reveal the above factors have led to “feeling under great stress several days a week.” Job satisfaction has decreased as well, from 68% “very satisfied” in 2008 to 59% in this year’s survey. One way to cope with this increased level of stress is through Mindfulness.

Mindfulness has become mainstream as corporations, hospitals, and other large industries have embraced mindful practice for its ability to reduce stress and improve interactions with other people. Oakland University’s School of Education & Human Services is pleased to announce the Mindfulness for School Leaders workshop to be held at Oakland University in Rochester, MI on Tuesday, June 21.

This is a workshop that is designed for all school leaders who want to improve their leadership practice, reduce stress, develop resilience, and thrive at work. Dr. Caryn Wells, Associate Professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership at Oakland University will offer this full-day workshop for administrators at all levels that includes time for interaction, problem solving, reflection, mindful practice, mindful self-compassion, and goal setting.

Dr. Wells has been teaching mindfulness principles to graduate students in educational leadership and teacher leadership classes, with introductions to doctoral and medical students. She is a former guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal. She has presented about mindful leadership at several conferences and to several professional organizations. She is the author of the book, Mindfulness: How School Leaders Can Reduce Stress and Thrive on the Job, to be published in March 2016 by Rowman and Littlefield. Conference attendees will receive a copy of the book.
