Autism Spectrum Disorder Education: Basic

Overview
100% ONLINE

The Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder Education: Basic (also known as an ASD Teaching Endorsement) focuses on in-depth preparation for working with students with autism spectrum disorders in K-12 settings. Candidates are required to have (or be eligible for) a Michigan teacher certification at either the elementary or secondary level. No prior special education endorsement is required.

Candidates who wish to apply coursework from the Basic Graduate Certificate in ASD to the M.Ed. in Special Education with ASD Concentration (endorsement) would be better served by applying directly to the M.Ed. in Special Education with ASD Concentration program. Credits for the certificate program may be applied to the degree only if the student requests in writing to transfer to the degree program prior to the completion of the certificate.

If you are not a teacher and are not intending to pursue teacher certification, but are interested in expanding your knowledge of and skills in working with individuals affected by ASD, please consider our Graduate Certificate in Autism for Multiple Disciplines.

Plan of Study - Please see a sample Plan of Study showing required courses in this 27-credit graduate certificate program.

Practicum/Student Teaching* - In partial fulfillment of the requirements to earn this credential, the Michigan Department of Education requires that candidates complete a minimum of 240 clock hours in a supervised practicum experience, teaching students with autism spectrum disorders. The practicum is offered as the final experience required for K-12 certification in ASD. The specific nature of the experience will be individually determined at the time of approval of the practicum request.
*The practicum must be completed at a site approved by the faculty adviser.
