Workshops and Youth Ensembles

Music, Theatre and Dance at OU offers community members an opportunity to participate in workshops on our spacious wooded campus in suburban Rochester Hills, Michigan. Our workshops are taught by our faculty and by guest performers and teachers.

These outstanding arts performance workshops combine an open and collaborative atmosphere with rigorous standards and excellent teaching.

Refunds will be given up to one week prior to the event date. Cancellations within one week of the event date will not be refunded.

Exceptions
  • Great Lakes Dance Festival - full refund given if written notification received by June 15, 2015. 50% refund issued if written notification received by June 30, 2015. No refunds considered after June 30th without medical documentation.

Percussion Day

Oakland University Percussion Day

Free Admission - NO registration required

A feast of percussion from around the world, featuring workshops and individual lessons with Sean Dobbins, Patrick Fitzgibbon, Dan Maslanka, and Mark Stone as well as workshops with Michael Medvinsky, Sam Jeyasingham, and special guest artist Joe Locke.

Open to all ages. Workshops cover a wide range of percussion areas (see descriptions below). Please bring a sack lunch as well as music and mallets/sticks for your optional individual lesson. Sign up for these 20-minute lessons will take place on site the morning of Percussion Day.

Clarinet and Saxophone Solo and Ensemble Day

Free admission

Students in grades 7-12 are invited to perform solo and ensemble works in preparation for Solo and Ensemble Festivals.  Oakland University professors George Stoffan, clarinet, and Jeff Heisler, saxophone, will offer suggestions for soloists and ensembles.  Clarinet and saxophone ensembles, as well as mixed ensembles, are encouraged to perform.  Even if students have already performed in a Solo and Ensemble Festival, this session can help in preparation for performances at the state level.  All will benefit from the opportunity to perform for all in attendance and from the feedback from Professors Stoffan and Heisler.

Note: Parents and Teachers are welcome to attend!

Piano Day

2016 Piano Day - Sunday, January 31, 2016  Noon - 6pm

Students (ages 10-18) will enjoy a mini-private lesson with an Oakland University piano faculty member, special presentations, a recital by Oakland University piano students, and an Honors Recital by Piano Day participants. Cash prizes will be awarded after the Honors Recital.Repertoire Requirement: 1-2 Solo Pieces. Memory encourage, but not required. Teachers and parents observe for free!

Registration begins at 11 am.

The Piano Department at Oakland University is pleased to announce a Piano Camp for young pianists 12-17 years of age. Younger pianists will be considered upon recommendation of the faculty. Activities include solo and ensemble lessons, musicianship classes, and performance. Note: This camp is not for beginning piano students.

Honor Band members will be selected through director nominations . The deadline for nominations is Friday, September 25th. The honor band roster will be emailed to directors by October 1, with more information about registration. We hope to select at least one student from all schools that submit 2 or more nominations. Please do not hesitate to contact Deneen Stapleton at (248) 370-2039 with any questions about the nomination process.
