Sponsored by the Great Lakes Aradhana Committee. Carnatic music is South India’s classical music, an art form practiced for more than 3,000 years. The Carnatic tradition is founded in the Indian systems of raga (melodic modes) and tala (rhythmic cycles). The music blends complex devotional compositions with intricate improvisations and virtuosic interplay between the voice or a lead instrumentalist with the accompanying mridangam (drum) and violin. An Evening of Carnatic Music offers a unique learning experience featuring a pre-concert discussion followed by a grand classical concert performed in the traditional style. $14 general, $8 students April 1st pre-concert discussion at 6 p.m. and Concert at 7 p.m.
