Graphic Design and Culture in the Netherlands and France
Travel abroad to the Netherlands and France to study the relationship between design and culture through first-hand travel experience. We begin in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven, and continue to France, including Paris and Chaumont, on the 15-day study abroad program. DES 3900 Special Topics Study Abroad: Design and Culture in the Netherlands and France course and program include assignments, participation on tours, professional design studio visits, and excursions in select study abroad locations. Spring Break Year TBD.
Will Be
You will travel abroad to the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven, and to France, including Paris and Chaumont. These European cities are within a three-hour train ride or less away from one another, with different design histories and styles in each location.
Do and Learn
The trip includes studio visits and workshops with local designers and artists; a private tour of historic French papers and press; visits to design-focused galleries, concept stores, bookstores, and museums; and individual time for exploration.
Experience the modernism, functionalism and minimalism of Dutch design, in contrast to the experience of art nouveau, romanticism, and experimental typography of French design. The course exposes students to how design reflects and responds to culture and history with the sharp design contrasts between the Netherlands, France and the United States.
Methods of instruction in this course will include assigned readings, writing and discussion, and field visits. A series of readings will be required to complete prior to landing in Europe. The readings will prepare students’ experiences abroad, providing historical and contemporary context for increased understanding. The readings will be used for participation in a Moodle discussion forum.
Bring
A complete suggested packing list will be provided, but a sample of the items includes:
- Attire: comfortable walking shoes, cold weather walking gear, jacket for unexpectedly cold and rainy days, hat
- Electronics: laptop, camera, chargers, voltage converter/adapter
- Personal items: toiletries, sunscreen, medicine
Preference will be given to students seeking graphic design elective course credit.
You must have a valid passport with expiration not sooner than six months after return to the United States.
