Conference Assistant

Job summary

Conference Assistants (CA) are hired to assist in all facets of the Residence Halls Conference Program. Duties include administrative, clerical, and physical operations assigned in connection with the general management of the conference program. A major portion of the job is working at the service desk, assisting conference and hostel guests, mediating residential conflict, social programming and participating in an on-call duty rotation on nights and weekends.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Must have one semester of on-campus living experience
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations

Responsibilities and duties

  • Assist in the preparation of conference housing facilities including inventorying supplies, set up at reception desks, key preparation, and decorating bulletin boards.
  • Work at the service desk to handle all aspects of mail, including package logging and equipment checkout.
  • Work in the Housing Office performing administrative tasks.
  • Serve in a duty rotation including weeknights, weekends, and summer holidays.
  • Respond to all situations involving conference guests and summer residents and notify supervisors for follow-up and emergency assistance as part of serving on duty.
  • Complete tasks, programs, and paperwork by the assigned deadlines.
  • Perform check-in and check-out procedures as assigned for conference guests and summer residents.

Job summary

Housing Ambassadors interact with prospective and incoming students during Undergraduate Admissions and orientation events, or other events designed to recruit prospective students. Students are trained to perform University Housing presentations and tours that accurately and enthusiastically represent the Department of University Housing.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Must have lived on campus for a minimum of one semester
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher

Responsibilities and duties

  • Active participation in, and engagement with, the marketing and recruitment plan for the Department of University Housing.
  • Interact with prospective and incoming students during orientation events or other events designed to recruit students to live on campus.
  • Provide tours of housing facilities that accurately and enthusiastically represent the Department of University Housing.
  • Support the Hillcrest Hall Housing Office as needed.

Job summary

Maintenance Assistants are responsible for assisting in facility operations, including trash disposal, after hours on-call coverage response, and projects that relate to facility maintenance and enhancement.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Trash pickup as directed
  • Can expect other related duties, such as; supply delivery, meeting room and furniture set-ups, student room furniture set-up, cleaning of Residence Halls in absence of full-time employees, cleaning of vacant apartments, carpet shampooing, etc. 
  • Saturday and Sunday hours are offered with flexible schedules

Qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Desired qualification: Previous maintenance or custodial experience is preferred but not required.

Nightwatch Desk Workers (NW) help maintain safety by checking the IDs of students and guests entering the residence halls.

  • Work multiple shifts weekly
  • Make sure the appropriate doors are locked in the building
  • Check the validity of residential status by swiping student IDs
  • Sign in all students/guests that do not live in the Oakland University Housing community
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Keep Nightwatch stations and closets organized

Residence Life Association Executive Board Member

Job summary

The Residence Life Association (RLA) is the governing body of housing at OU. RLA members advocate for important issues within University Housing. They review policies, host programs, and discuss any concerns from residential students.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher

Responsibilities and duties

President

  • Serve as the official representative of the Residence Life Association to campus
  • Preside over all RLA executive board, general body, and business meetings
  • Serve as a liaison to residential communities, graduate staff, and professional staff
  • Develop, implement and execute Community Council Training for new Community Council Members
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours a week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

Operations Coordinator

  • Prepare and present budget reports for the weekly executive board and business meetings
  • Help track and coordinate donations for events with local vendors
  • Responsible for the distribution and maintenance of all RLA-owned equipment
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

Marketing Coordinator

  • Maintain records of the Residence Life Association, including but not limited to meeting minutes and attendance reports
  • Post minutes to the RLA website and Google Drive and send them to meeting attendees within one business day following RLA general body meetings
  • Responsible for helping to create and distribute advertisements for RLA programs
  • Work with the Housing Enrollment team to provide social media content about RLA with photos, updates, and events once a week
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

Programming Coordinator 

  • Survey resident opinions and feedback on what programming they would like to see in University Housing
  • Keep an updated calendar of all RLA events
  • Plan large-scale programs such as Halloween Events and Siblings Weekend
  • Responsible for coordinating attendance records of programs and events as well as notes of what worked and did not work
  • Assist the diversity & inclusion programming coordinator with small scale programming
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Programming Coordinator 

  • Plan at least two programs per semester about multicultural, diversity, equity, or inclusion topics, issues, and initiatives
  • Plan other small-scale or passive programs with the programming coordinators
  • Assist the programming coordinators with large scale events
  • Responsible for coordinating attendance records of programs and events as well as notes of what worked and did not workServe a minimum of 5 office hours per week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

National Communications Coordinator

  • Serve as the liaison between Residence Life Association and the national and regional affiliates
  • Notify RLA of any critical updates or opportunities occurring within the national and regional affiliates
  • Serve as a liaison to NRHH and Student Congress and the parliamentarian for RLA business meetings
  • Assume all presidential duties upon the absence of the President
  • Serve a minimum of 5 office hours per week
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with the RLA team and in the RLA email account with all executive board members

Job summary

Resident Assistants (RA) live in the residence halls and student apartments where they advise and mentor students living on their assigned floor or building, and actively encourage a positive residential environment. They offer students advice and guidance in academic, social, and financial matters and handle several administrative duties. They also help residents become acquainted with the university and residential community.

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing or be enrolled as a graduate student at Oakland University

Responsibilities and duties

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student who is hired to mentor their assigned residents, as well as support all residents in their community on academic, personal, social, and financial matters. In addition, they perform administrative duties in connection with the general management of their community. A major portion of the RA’s job will be to actively influence the environment and encourage students to participate in programs and activities through leadership and availability. This job is contracted for the full academic year, including the fall and winter semesters. RAs are expected to move out at the end of their contracted period of employment.

  • Become acquainted with and build rapport with all of their assigned residents.
  • Foster a community that is supportive of all residents by promoting acceptance and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
  • Help residents adapt to living on campus as changes occur.
  • Act as a positive role model for residents.
  • Respond to emergency situations at any time of the day and night.
  • Refer residents to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Plan and implement programs to foster community and to educate residents on issues pertinent to their development.
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation.
  • Complete all assigned administrative work including, but not limited to, weekly reports, duty logs, and program forms.
  • Participate in the opening and closing of the residence halls during all recess periods.
  • Support and enforce all Oakland University and University Housing policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in an ancillary assignment

Job summary

A Residential Peer Tutor is a student with previous residential experience who provides academic support in various ways. In addition to course-specific tutoring, Residential Peer Tutors provide additional guidance for students facing challenges by providing resources and referrals to campus professionals.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 3.0 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations
  • Possess strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Working conditions involve working in an environment with limited privacy and noise. Staff may be called to respond to situations at any time of the day and night. The job requires moderate physical effort when responding to emergencies.
  • Desired qualifications:
    • Plan to reside on campus for the fall 2023-winter 2024 academic year preferred but not required.
    • Have one semester of on-campus living experience preferred but not required

Responsibilities and duties

Residential Peer Tutors address residents' unique academic and social concerns from the first year in college until graduation. They provide educational programming, refer students to professional resources on campus, including the Residential Academic Success staff. They must complete comprehensive training before each academic year, including the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). There will be ongoing training throughout employment, including crisis response, Oakland University policies, University Housing policies, and professional development skills training.

  • Make daily contact with residents as assigned on personal, social, and academic status.
  • Remain visible to residents by spending a significant amount of time interacting with their assigned community.
  • Organize and promote study groups, academically themed programs, and events as assigned.
  • Attain tutoring certification provided by the Academic Success Center and complete additional certification hours as assigned.
  • Attend a practicum with Oakland University's Writing Center and participate in ongoing training as necessary.
  • Hold formal tutoring hours in a designated location as assigned.
  • Serve as a positive role model for University Housing and Oakland University at all times.

Service Desk Attendants in University Housing create a welcoming environment and act as the central location for exchanging information for students and guests.

  • Sort and handle packages delivered for residents to pick up
  • Loan cleaning equipment such as vacuums to residents
  • Perform administrative duties necessary for efficient building operation

The Student Assistant - Residential Facilities is responsible for supporting the Assistant Director for Residential Facilities as well as providing support for the office of the Assistant Director for Finance and Operations within University Housing.

  • Greet in-person guests and answer phones

  • Performs work related on-campus errands and keeps office areas clean and tidy

Student Office Assistants (SOA) play a significant role in the administrative support of the front office operations by triaging phone calls, emails, and in-person visits to the main Housing Office in 448 Hamlin Hall.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023.
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations

Responsibilities and duties

  • Greet in-person guests and answer phones
  • Assist with residential check-ins/outs and room change processes.
  • Support key distribution and collection process
  • File paper documents and prepare mailings
  • Complete campus delivery runs as needed
  • Provide Housing tours to prospective residents
  • Connect students to relevant university resources
  • Completing daily rounds through residence hall service desks
  • Complete special projects and other tasks as needed

Position Specific Conditions

  • Must be able to work between 10-25 hours per week; hours worked may fluctuate and extend past regular hours of operation (after 5 p.m.)
  • Having one year of Oakland University experience is preferred
  • Be comfortable using the Google Drive platform, including Sheets, Docs, Calendar, Sites, and Forms
  • Possess a professional demeanor, a high level of maturity, and an ability to use independent judgment
  • Be familiar with OU resources, services, and departments
  • Be an effective communicator with Housing staff and guests
  • Be able to think critically, problem-solve and utilize Housing resources as needed to support residents,prospective residents, and Housing Office guests

Sustaining Our Planet Earth (SOPE) Ambassadors help implement campus-wide programs to promote sustainability and educate students, faculty, and staff about environmental practices. Ambassadors also serve as the conduit between faculty, staff, students, and SOPE.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher

  • The ability to roll recycling containers weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis

Responsibilities and duties

  • Facilitate eco-focused programs within the residential community
  • Assist with planning annual sustainability programs
  • Lead campus projects that center on sustainability initiatives
  • Handle the responsibility of taking out recycling bins within an assigned community weekly
  • Work on at least one project per semester that actively implements change on campus

Job summary

University Housing's Technology Helpdesk Technicians are student employees. In addition to providing desktop support to University Housing employees, this position provides technical support for students at the University Housing Technology Helpdesk in Hamlin Hall and Hillcrest Hall.

Minimum qualifications and skills

  • Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at Oakland University by fall 2023
  • Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher
  • Must not be found responsible for serious conduct violations
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot modern computer operating systems for Windows and Mac platforms. This includes but is not limited to
    • OS installation, updates, and troubleshooting
    • effective software installation
    • device drivers installation and update
    • knowledge of how to properly secure an OS
    • extensive knowledge of virus and malware removal
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills. This includes but is not limited to
    • ability to effectively relay information and directions to customers face-to-face, over the phone, and via email
    • effective conflict management skills in customer service and inter-office situations
  • High proficiency in the use of Internet search engines for problem-solving
  • Networking knowledge including but not limited to
    • basic WiFi functionality Basic understanding of DHCP/IP
    • basic understanding of LAN hardware and functionality
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain trustworthiness

  • Serving as a help desk representative at the University Housing Technology Help Desk
  • Assisting in maintaining workstations, printers, and scanners in the University Housing public spaces
  • Assisting in installations and basic desktop support of University Housing workstations and peripherals
  • Assisting the Information Technology Analyst with special projects when necessary
