Laundry
Service
Don't worry about carrying your weight in quarters around OU. Every housing unit has at least one laundry room for residents to use free of charge.

Residence halls have laundry rooms equipped with Maytag washers and dryers, laundry sinks, chairs and tables. Each apartment in the Ann V. Nicholson student apartment complex has its own washer and dryer. The George T. Matthews student apartment complex has two central laundry rooms with three washers, three dryers, a laundry sink and sorting table in each one.

Each machine takes about 30 minutes to wash and 60 minutes to dry. Never leave your belongings or clothes unattended in any of the laundry rooms. Machines are for resident use only. Mechanical problems with any washer or dryer should be reported online via My Housing.

Laundry service
For $10-15 per bag, have your laundry picked up and then returned to your residence hall or apartment cleaned and pressed. This laundry service is provided by young adults with autism at the OU INCubator on campus, supervised by OU business school students. Call (248) 881-9677 or email nmziolko@oakland.edu for info.
Addressing
Mail
Mail service is most efficient if incoming mail is addressed properly.

Mail Service
Each residence hall room and student apartment unit has a locked mailbox. Residence hall mailboxes are located on the main floor of each building and can be opened using the corresponding room keys. Mailboxes for Ann V. Nicholson student apartment residents are located in the Community House and can be opened with special mailbox keys (each mailbox corresponds to each student’s bedroom number). Mailboxes for George T. Matthews student apartment residents are right outside each apartment.

Packages
Residence hall students who receive a package will get a notice in their mailbox to pick up the package at either the Hamlin, Oak View or Vandenberg reception desk. Students must present their student ID to receive the package.

Ann V. Nicholson student apartment residents who receive a package will get a notice in their mailbox along with a key to a parcel box located inside the Community House. If the package is too large for the parcel box, the student is asked to pick it up in the apartment office.

Outgoing mail
All students can buy stamps or mail letters at the Hamlin, Oak View and Vandenberg reception desks. The Community House also has a mail slot where letters can be mailed. Residents in the George T. Matthews student apartments can place outgoing mail in their individual mailbox for the post office to pick up.

Forwarding mail
Oak View desk receptionists handle forwarding of U.S. mail. First-class mail is forwarded for a period of one year. Magazines and newspapers will not be forwarded; to continue to receive them, you should change your address with the publisher at least four weeks before leaving campus. Mail forwarded from the George T. Matthews student apartments is handled through the Rochester Post Office.

Follow these steps to ensure your mail is forwarded after you move:
Residence hall students must complete a change-of-address card and leave it at the Hamlin, Oak View or Vandenberg reception desks.

Ann V. Nicholson student apartment residents must complete a change-of-address card at the time of checkout.
George T. Matthews student apartment residents must complete a change-of-address card at any U.S. Post Office.
Maintenance
and Repairs
Have something in your room or apartment that needs to be fixed? Mechanical problems with a washer or dryer in one of the laundry rooms or apartments? You can submit maintenance request via My Housing.

Please note: The maintenance staff exercises reasonable care while cleaning and repairing rooms, but the university is not responsible for personal items that are lost, damaged or stolen.

Quick steps for reporting an issue

  1. Log into your My Housing account.
  2. Click on the Maintenance Requests link in the left-hand navigation. The system will automatically assume that you are reporting a problem in your own room. To submit a maintenance request for a room other than your own, click on the link that appears under your address.
  3. In the Problem Title box, write a very brief description of your problem (i.e., “leaking sink").
  4. From the drop-down menu in the Category box, choose the appropriate category for your problem.
  5. In the Description of Problem box, write a detailed description of your problem. Be sure to include your name and contact number (i.e., "The sink in the left-hand bathroom has been leaking heavily for 24 hours. Please contact Jane Smith at (248) 123-4567 with questions.)"
  6. Click the Submit Maintenance Request button at the bottom of the page.
You can check in on the status of your request by logging back into your My Housing account and clicking Maintenance Requests.

You may also report problems by leaving a message on the Trouble Line at (248) 370-2954.
TV/Cable
Basic cable is included in the cost of your housing contract through Comcast Cable. The cable network can be accessed via traditional coaxial connections or an HDMI port located on a wall-mounted cable box; however, only the HDMI connection can receive high definition channels. A room-specific remote is provided with each cable box, and must remain in the room after the student moves out, or they may be charged for a replacement remote.

Students are not permitted to install alternative forms of cable TV access; however, they may upgrade their Comcast cable package. Please note that any agreement with Comcast for services above and beyond what is provided by University Housing is a contract between Comcast Cable and the student who orders the services. University Housing and Oakland University have no responsibility for any additional charges or equipment.

Students may not change the existing Internet service package by purchasing and installing any of Comcast’s broadband Internet services in their rooms as it violates Oakland University’s network usage policies. Violation of this policy will result in judicial action.

Residents who experience trouble with their cable can contact the University Housing Office at (248) 370-3570 to make an appointment with Comcast Cable. All other questions regarding cable service can be directed to Comcast Cable.
