Dissertation & thesis award nominations

To acknowledge the critical importance of producing quality dissertations and theses, Oakland University established an annual competition to confer up to two Graduate Dissertations and one Thesis Award. The intent of the award is to showcase excellence in graduate work, and to partially defray the cost of producing an outstanding document.

Nomination forms are available through your department, along with the list of eligible thesis and dissertations. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 6, 2020

The awards are $1,000 for a Ph.D. dissertation and $750 for a master’s thesis.

In addition to these awards, one STEM and one non-STEM dissertation or thesis may be selected as the university's outstanding dissertation or thesis. With consent of the author, the Graduate School may forward the university's outstanding dissertation or thesis to the Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award competition or the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Distinguished Master's Thesis Award competition, as appropriate.

Eligibility

Nominees must have received their graduate degrees in the winter, summer or fall semester of the previous calendar year.

Nomination Process

Any faculty member is eligible to submit a nomination for consideration by his or her graduate program; however, each graduate program may only submit one nomination per academic year. A completed nomination will consist of:

  • A completed nomination form
    • click the Helpful Documents button at the top and select the Dissertation & Thesis Nominations folder
  • A summary of the nominated work which clearly indicates the methodological and substantive quality of the dissertation or thesis
  • A cover letter from the program coordinator describing why the dissertation or thesis was chosen for nomination by the program
  • Two additional letters of support, one of which optimally will be from the dissertation or thesis supervisor
  • A copy of the completed dissertation or thesis (electronic copy preferred)

The summary and reference letters must be written in language that a faculty member who is not in the same discipline as the nominee can clearly understand.

Selection

A faculty committee consisting of representatives from each of the professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences will review the nominations and recommend award recipients to the Provost. The committee's decision will be based on the methodological and substantive aspects of the nominated works, including but not limited to:

  • The overall scholarly contribution of the work
  • The quality of writing and organization of the dissertation or thesis
  • The originality or creativity of the work

The summary and letters of reference should directly address these specific areas, as well as any other observations that help delineate the excellence of the nominated work.
