Available Financial Assistance

Since our founding in 1957, Oakland University has made affordable tuition a priority, even offering tuition-free opportunities for those who qualify. The whole community benefits when first-class education is accessible to everyone.

More than half of all Oakland University students receive financial assistance totaling more than $175 million annually. You can benefit from those funds, too. For consideration of financial assistance from OU, the State of Michigan and the federal government, you should complete the FAFSA every year, as soon as possible after October 1, for the next school year. Awards depend on the availability of funds. If you complete the FAFSA in October, you can expect to receive award notifications beginning in December.

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are considered free money, as they do not have to be repaid. Grants are based on financial need while scholarships are based on academic merit.

Oakland University offers nearly 250 grants and scholarships, many renewable annually, to current undergraduate and graduate students. Additional scholarships may be available through various academic departments or programs and require their own application. OU offers and renews awards at its sole and absolute discretion; offers and renewals are contingent upon the availability of funds and continuation of the programs.

Renewal Criteria for Grants and Scholarships

OU scholarships and grants are renewable, provided the criteria is met. Scholarships and grants are evaluated for renewal over the summer; students who attend full-time during the summer semester and utilize their scholarship and/or grant will be evaluated for renewal after summer grades have been posted. View examples and frequently asked questions of renewal scenarios for help in understanding eligibility after the first year. Then, answer the questions below to view the renewal criteria for scholarships and/or grants awarded in the year you first enrolled at OU; be sure to view the additional information following the renewal chart.

Students who do not meet renewal criteria and have extenuating circumstances, such as the death of an immediate family member or a serious illness or injury of the student, can request consideration for scholarship and/or grant reinstatement by calling a financial aid adviser at (248) 370-2550 or coming to North Foundation Hall, Room 120.

*Attendance in summer classes requires enrollment in full-time OU credits (12+ credits), uses one semester of scholarship eligibility and counts toward the renewal semesters. Academic performance will be reviewed at the end of the summer semester to determine if the student is eligible for scholarship renewal for the following fall semester. If the student does not complete full-time (12+ credits) and/or meet the GPA requirement for renewal, the award(s) will be canceled for any remaining semesters at OU.

**Students participating in a Community College Partnership program must attend OU full-time in their first college semester to be eligible to renew.

***Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits each fall and winter semester, excluding repeated courses within the same academic year, on the last day to drop/add classes with a 100% refund for the full semester.

**** Beginning fall 2017 the cumulative GPA for renewal is 3.0 and the student must have received the award during the 2016-2017 academic year.
