David Shaerf is the coordinator of the screenwriting specialization in the Creative Writing program. He has written, directed and produced a number of award winning short films and plays in both New Zealand, where he attended Victoria University of Wellington as well as in the UK where he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Exeter.

His area of research outside of screenwriting is the study of narrative structures of documentary films focusing on community groups.

Shaerf’s debut feature documentary, Call Us Ishmael, is a film that investigates the community of artists, authors and performers who have devoted their artistic endeavor to Moby-Dick. The film  is distributed by Gravitas Ventures.
