Biography

Brendan Kredell is an Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies in the Department of English at Oakland University. His research focuses on the intersection of media and urban studies, an area in which he has published and presented extensively. With Marijke de Valck and Skadi Loist, he co-edited the book Film Festivals: History, Theory, Method, Practice (Routledge, 2016), and also serves as co-editor of Mediapolis: A Journal of Cities and Culture. His research has been supported by a number of grants and fellowships, including a Fulbright fellowship to study culture-led redevelopment in Toronto.

His current research is broadly focused in two areas. The first explores the evolving relationship between cities and the American film industry at the turn of the 21st century, examining in particular the role of the media industries in the reimagining of the post-industrial city. The second project uses geospatial and data analysis tools and neighborhood-level film consumption data to map the geography of taste amongst US movie viewers, contextualizing viewing habits within broader socio-cultural and demographic patterns.

At Oakland, Prof. Kredell serves as the faculty advisor of the student-edited journal Screen Culture and is one of the faculty organizers of the annual Toronto International Film Festival trip.
