Departmental History & Mission

The mission of the Department of English is to advance and disseminate knowledge in the areas of English language, literature, literary history, literary theory, film, ethnic literature, pedagogy, popular culture, and writing. This mission is carried out through formal and informal programs of instruction, research, writing, and, as an extension of these, service.

Teaching is the activity to which members of the Department devote the largest amount of our time, and it is the one which we consider of greatest importance. Research, which produces the knowledge with which the Department engages its students, is our other major priority.

Formally, the Department offers an undergraduate major and a minor in English, a major in English specifically designed for the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP), a modified major with a linguistics concentration, a secondary teaching minor in English, and an M.A. program in literature.

Members of the Department also share our knowledge with our professional peers, with university and non-university students, and with the community, in advising, consulting, lecturing, leading discussion groups, and many other related activities.
