Adina Schneeweis is a professor of journalism, teaching visual courses in photojournalism, video storytelling, and multimedia, as well as diversity and social justice issues in the media. She is a past Faculty Fellow for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, has led several Learning Communities focused on listening and storytelling, and serves as Provost Fellow for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion since 2021. She is the founder and editor of the interdisciplinary project Storytelling Diversity.
Schneeweis received her Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Minnesota in 2009. A native of Romania, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in journalism at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Before coming to the United States to begin her graduate studies, she worked as a filmmaker and created more than 50 documentaries on Romanian culture for a national public television station. She also freelanced and wrote feature stories for the largest daily newspaper in her home town.
Her research focuses on the construction and translation of race and ethnicity across a variety of platforms, from media and journalism, to advocacy and health communication. Starting from the case study of the Roma in Europe, her scholarship contextualizes news and activism as institutional platforms implicated in politicized and hierarchical acts of minority construction. She earned two competitive faculty research fellowships and has published work in a range of prestigious journals, including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Communication, Culture & Critique, Popular Communication, Women’s Studies in Communication, International Communication Gazette, and Critical Public Health, to name a few. She has presented numerous articles at international and national conferences. She is a past chair of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Cultural and Critical Studies Division. She is an Embark Program mentor through OU’s William Beaumont School of Medicine.
