Chapter 1: Foundation ; Purpose, Process, and People

Building on a Legacy of Vision

From its founding in 1957, Oakland University has been guided by a pioneering spirit. The creation of the Campus Plan 2035 carries that tradition forward, reaffirming our commitment to adaptability and innovation. This plan is both a reflection of our achievements and a catalyst for what comes next.

The process began with a simple question: What kind of campus will best serve our mission in the next decade and beyond? To answer this, OU embarked on a 14‑month journey of listening and learning;holding open houses, conducting surveys, and engaging with hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Each conversation informed the plan’s priorities, ensuring that it reflects the shared aspirations of our campus community.

A Collaborative Process

The plan was developed in five overlapping phases:

  1. Discovery – Gathering data and perspectives on existing conditions.
  2. Analysis – Assessing how our facilities, infrastructure, and landscapes perform today.
  3. Idea Generation – Developing scenarios for how OU could evolve to meet future needs.
  4. Refinement – Testing ideas through engagement, surveys, and committee review.
  5. Documentation – Finalizing a flexible, data-informed framework.

The Foundation for the Future

Campus Plan 2035 is rooted in the belief that place shapes purpose. Our campus;its buildings, pathways, and natural features;tells the story of who we are. By aligning our physical environment with our academic and strategic goals, we honor that story while preparing for the next chapter.
