Biography

John Freeman has a B.A. in Literature from University of Detroit Mercy and an M.F.A. in poetry writing from Bowling Green State University. He teaches WRT 1050, 1060, and 3086 at OU. He publishes poetry and creative nonfiction under the name “Cal Freeman” and is the author of the books Brother of Leaving and Fight Songs.  

Freeman has taught at OU since 2008. He lets students define the classroom space as much as possible both in terms of guiding discussions and identifying the topics, natures, and forms of their projects. He is highly influenced by educators like Paulo Freire, John Taylor Gatto, and John Dewey. Freeman's students create blogs, shoot and edit digital video, share and discuss original photographs on moodle forums, and do ethnographic research on online communities.
