Biography

Matt Burkett has been teaching in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric since 2008. As part of his teaching philosophy, he makes a conscious effort in his classes to create a welcoming environment so the students feel comfortable to express themselves in conversation and in their individual and group projects. He assigns both traditional, written assignments and multimodal, technology-based assignments with the encouragement that students choose topics that are meaningful to their personal hobbies, interests, or future career paths.

To spur course discussion, to create interesting course assignments/projects, and to make sure he appeals to students’ varied interests and backgrounds, Burkett has used podcasts, clips of stand-up comedy, movies and TV episodes, video games, Youtube videos, and NPR stories on sports, hunting/outdoors, fashion, music, politics, medicine, and education. He takes pride in showing students that writing is more than just tedious drills concerned with grammar and punctuation.
