Part-Time Special Lecturer of Writing and Rhetoric Positions

All openings for part-time Special Lecturers are currently filled; however, those interested may place an application on file. We typically review applications in early summer to make determinations for unstaffed sections the following fall and winter. Position Title: Special Lecturer in First-Year Writing and/or Business Writing

Requirements are an MA degree in Rhetoric and Composition or related field (Ph.D. preferred), knowledge of composition pedagogy and teaching new media, and minimum of one year of teaching experience in a computer classroom or partially online setting. Experience with course management software such as Moodle or Blackboard is required. Working visa for non­-US citizens is required.

  1. A cover letter expressing teaching interests, experiences, and availability. Be sure to include the following information:
    1. A statement of teaching philosophy including pedagogical approach and use of technology and new media.
    2. Minimum and maximum number of sections desired, available/preferred days of the week, times of day, and degree of online activity.
  2.  A current and complete curriculum vitae with contact information; educational history (including continuing education); teaching history listing all institutions and sections taught; other relevant employment history; publications, conference attendance, presentations and relevant professional development experience.
  3. Sample syllabi, instruction assignments, grading rubrics, student projects, or any other documents that would be helpful in illustrating your teaching approach.
  4. Letters of recommendation from two academic professionals who are qualified to evaluate your teaching ability, including one from a writing program administrator for whom you have taught.

Compensation: Special Lecturers typically teach 4­8 sections per academic year and receive a competitive starting salary. Special lecturers are also eligible for tuition remission (8 credits per year) and partial health benefits.

2015-2020 OU AAUP Bargaining Agreement regarding Special Lecturers:

Regular part-time employment (Special Lecturer) is defined as teaching 16 or more credits in a calendar year, at least 8 of which must be taught during either the fall or winter semester. A person rendering such service shall be titled "special lecturer" and shall be represented by the Association during such period. Employment periods shall be one year, commencing August 15, renewable indefinitely. After four years of such service, employment periods shall be two years, renewable indefinitely. For the purposes of identifying special lecturers, it will be assumed that employees who have taught in the summer sessions immediately preceding the August 15 commencement of the employment period will teach the same number of credits in the following summer sessions.
