Research/Scholarship:
Dr. Brown’s research area is in exercise and diabetes, with a special focus on resistance exercise. She has established grip strength cut-points for determining diabetes risk in adults and cardiometabolic risk in adolescents, and has also examined the effects of acute and chronic effects of resistance exercise on cardiometabolic outcomes in adults with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Brown has also developed a questionnaire that measures the environmental effects on resistance training behavior. Past work includes determining the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training on body composition and cardiometabolic outcomes in women and school-based child obesity interventions developed by the Scottish National Health Service, and examining the overtraining syndrome in athletes and sexual coercion and female athletes. Future work will focus on refining the resistance training guidelines for people with type 2 diabetes, and examining barriers to resistance training in this population.
