Research/Scholarships:
As a registered dietitian, Dr. Lynch has an interest in how and why individuals make food and eating related decisions with the broad goal of improving dietary behaviors and informing nutrition practice. Dr. Lynch utilizes mixed method approaches to uncover how and why individuals make and maintain dietary and lifestyle changes to promote or sustain weight loss. She applies a variety of frameworks in her research including life course theory, self-regulation theory, and the Food Choice Process Model. Her most recent project focused on the experiences of bariatric surgery patients using qualitative interviews, food frequency questionnaires, and other surveys. Dr. Lynch is also interested in the role registered dietitians and primary care providers play in obesity treatment and prevention. The goals of her projects are to explain successful and sustainable dietary and lifestyle behaviors for weight loss maintenance, describe the cognitive and social factors that influence weight management, and identify ways health care providers can support patients in their weight management efforts. As a registered dietitian and long-time member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. Lynch is developing proficiency in dietetics education, particularly as it applies to competency based education and experiential learning.
