Biomedical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences

The Biomedical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Science (BDTS) program is designed to prepare students for professional opportunities in a variety of growing healthcare fields. Because it meets the basic academic requirements, the biomedical sciences curriculum provides excellent preparation for entry into post-baccalaureate professional programs.

Consider BDTS if you:
  • have a strong interest in science
  • want a career in health care
  • like challenge and responsibility
  • like to solve problems
Further your studies towards:
  • Medical school or Osteopathic school
  • Physician Assistant program
  • Dental or Optometry school
  • Master’s or Doctoral level programs in clinical or basic sciences (immunology, microbiology, cancer biology, pathology, etc)

Mission

The Biomedical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences program offers a variety of specializations founded on current advances in biomedical, imaging, and clinical sciences such that students are prepared for entry-level health-related employment or for graduate education in the laboratory sciences, related basic sciences, or for professional degrees. The program is committed to producing graduates who are competent, compassionate, who employ critical thinking skills, and who are poised to become leaders in their respective fields. The program is dedicated to generating and disseminating scholarly work and providing a learning environment that advocates professionalism and promotes excellence in healthcare service to the community.

Core
Curriculum
The pre-clinical education obtained from Oakland University consists of 2-4 years of pre-requisite and specialized classroom instruction meant to establish competencies in core scientific disciplines.

With exception to the Medical Laboratory Science specialization that receives post-graduate clinical training, students have the opportunity to earn a BDTS degree by completing a hospital based clinical internship program at affiliated institutions. Acceptance into the internship programs is competitive and is based on grade point average, personal interview and letters of recommendation. The application process for each of the specializations is unique.  Students are advised to read carefully about their chosen specialization.

To prepare for one of the BDTS specializations, a student must have a strong background in sciences including anatomy, physiology, math, physics and computer science.  Completion of courses within the BDTS core curriculum may be required for subsequent courses within each specialization. Consult the full BDTS degree requirement checklist for general education requirements that are satisfied by BDTS core curriculum courses.

Biomedical Diagnostic & Therapeutic Sciences major requires a cumulative GPA of 2.80 or higher for all specializations. Students are required to review the catalog for course grade requirements.

Biomedical
Science Society
The Biomedical Science Society works to give students a better understanding of the important roles medical laboratory science careers play in the field of medicine.

We also provide assistance for medical laboratory science students looking to build knowledge and skills helpful toward gaining entry into an internship in their chosen focus area by giving students a chance to meet with current students in their major, as well as with past graduates who are now in their internships or working in the field.

We welcome all interested students, whether they are medical laboratory science majors or just interested in learning more about the field.
