Office of the President

Welcome to the Office of the President

Head Shot 2015
Before founding Oakland University in 1957, Matilda Dodge Wilson embraced a vision of aspiration that was by no means limited to a select or privileged group of students. In fact, her desire to create a center of learning where students could “aspire to rise” intrinsically incorporated the belief that opportunity awaits motivated individuals from any walk of life.

So much has changed in the nearly six decades since Matilda Dodge Wilson shared this inspirational vision. I, for example, recently accepted the honor of succeeding five distinguished Oakland University presidents whose progressive efforts have allowed Oakland to grow in many remarkable ways.

Truly, we have become a preeminent metropolitan university that is a student-centered doctoral research institution with a global perspective.

Consider the fact that our inaugural class of 570 students has evolved into a student body of nearly 21,000. What began as a satellite, honors-based, liberal arts college is now an independent University comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, and six professional schools including the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. In the last five years alone, the University has invested more than $200 million in new facilities to meet student, faculty and program needs.

Oakland offers a welcoming, diverse, exciting and supportive environment that provides a vast range of academic, social and cultural experiences that engage our students and the community, and expand and refine their knowledge, their worldviews and their life aspirations.

As you navigate this site, I encourage you to learn more about the resources Oakland offers. I am confident that the more you do so, the more you will begin to see that “Aspire to Rise” is not merely a marketing slogan here at OU. It is an intrinsic ambition that inspires the students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and supporters of this distinctive metropolitan community.

Welcome to Oakland University!
