The Nu Omega Chapter at Oakland University has been selected for one of Pi Sigma Alpha's (PSA) Best Chapter Awards for 2018-2019. This is the sixth year in a row that OU’s chapter has been recognized nationally as a best Chapter.
The award is given annually to chapters that are exceptionally active in their universities and communities, and exhibit high levels of energy and creativity in furthering the goals of PSA. Oakland was one of only six schools with enrollments between 15,000 and 25,000 students selected to receive a Best Chapter Award.
Pi Sigma Alpha’s executive director Sean Twombly commented in a letter of congratulations to OU’s chapter that he recognized how hard the chapter officers and members have worked to sustain an active and vibrant chapter despite so many prior accolades.
"This past year demonstrated how the PSA Nu Omega Chapter, with the help of various Oakland University student organizations, exhibited excellence,” said Ajay Gill, OU student chapter president. “Our chapter invited and encouraged dialogue among our policymakers, in addition to educating OU students and local residents, while promoting membership into the PSA Honor Society. We also sponsored programs with local charities, because we believe there is much more to learn outside of the classrooms. I look forward to seeing what the next wave of Nu Omega leadership has planned in the coming months."
During the 2018-2019 academic year, Nu Omega welcomed 39 new members and hosted more than 30 events that focused on the chapter’s main goals of outreach and engagement beyond the university and philanthropy and charity.
In addition, the chapter continues to host the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics, which publishes outstanding undergraduate research from around the country on a bi-annual basis. The journal is operated entirely by undergraduate students from the host university, who review, edit and produce the journal.
Oakland University’s Nu Omega faculty adviser is Terri Towner, Ph.D., professor of Political Science and student leaders included: Ajay Gill, president, Ghazi Ghazi vice president, Christina Walker, treasurer and Hannah Gorosh, secretary.
"This recognition acknowledges the many events and activities that offered a welcoming place for intelligent discussion about government and politics,” said Professor Towner. “Our chapter president was a driving force in planning successful events such as the ‘Candidate Forum’ and ‘Political Humor Talk.’ These events targeted student engagement as well as the surrounding community."
For being named a 2019 Best Chapter, Nu Omega received a $700 honorarium and a certificate from the national PSA organization. Pi Sigma Alpha is the only honor society for college-level political science students in the U.S.
