Teacher Leadership: Teach. Lead. Inspire.

“This program helped immensely to boost my confidence and skills as a teacher and a leader. The instructors encouraged us to be critical friends and created a safe space to discuss questions and ideas.  I also gained a new network of teachers and professors.”

With all of the pressures on schools today, building administrators definitely need shared leadership! Many teachers want to lead, but do not want to become building administrators.* The State has recognized the need for teacher leaders and has created a new designation for the Michigan Teacher Certificate, a level called "Advanced Professional." This is currently the highest designation possible on a Michigan teaching certificate.

Teachers who desire the Advanced Professional designation must complete a state-approved certificate program and complete 5 consecutive years of teaching with Effective or Highly Effective teacher evaluations. Oakland University School of Education is proud to be the first Teacher Leadership certificate program approved by the State of Michigan for the Advanced Professional designation. Teachers enrolling in the certificate program will complete 15 credits of coursework designed specifically for the teacher leader. Those wishing to obtain a Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership will go beyond the first 15 credits required for the certificate to earn a total of 30 credits.

The Teacher Leadership certificate can be completed in one year, and the Masters can be completed in just under 2 years.

Who should enroll in this program?

  • Teachers who want to be influential leaders in their schools but don't want to become Principals
  • Teachers who want graduate coursework directly related to what they are doing in their classrooms NOW
  • Teachers who want a Masters Degree focused on helping them improve their practice while at the same time learning leadership theory and practice
  • Teachers who already have a Masters Degree but want the Advanced Practitioner designation

The Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership is a relatively new program at OU. Now in its third year, it is a cohort program that has a100% student satisfaction rating. The on-campus program is a hybrid format combining on-ground and online learning. To obtain more information, request an appointment or download an application packet, click here.
