Nearly 80 students presented at Oakland University's third annual Graduate Student Research Conference, which took place earlier this month. The event spotlighted a diverse array of research topics and was keynoted by Dr. Paul Sieving, director of the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
After welcome remarks by Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Dr. James Lentini, the conference kicked off with a talk from Susan M. Bower, who spoke about “What It Takes to Be a Successful Graduate Student.”
This was followed by an hour of poster presentations from students in Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, School of Education and Human Services, School of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. Students also delivered oral presentations on a variety of research topics, including prostate cancer, stem cells, food insecurity and self-esteem issues.
After a lunch break, attendees returned to the conference to hear remarks from OU President Ora Pescovitz. This was followed by Dr. Sieving’s keynote speech, which spotlighted the topic of “Ocular Gene Therapy for X-linked Retinoschisis.”
The event concluded with student award presentations by Physical Therapy Faculty Member, Dr. Christine Stiller, who also served as chair of the 2018 Graduate Student Research Conference Committee.
