OUWB physicians Rachel Hanke (left) and Stephanie Goike (right) are two of the many former and current medical students who have volunteered at the organ and bone marrow donor event in prior years.

The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine will be hosting its 5th Annual Organ & Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily Sept. 26-28 in the Kresge Library.

The OUWB Medical Library has hosted an annual organ donor drive since 2012 as part of Michigan Libraries for Life, a statewide initiative to increase organ donation awareness in collegiate, special and public libraries throughout the state.

The drive will support Gift of Life Michigan and Be the Match, and is made possible by the the OUWB Student National Medical Association, the OU Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, the OU Cancer Awareness Society, OUWB Diversity and Inclusion, and OUWB Medical Library.

The bone marrow registry sign-up requires a sample of cells via a cheek swab. The sample is used to compare specific protein markers with patients who need a bone marrow transplant. Those who want to be on the organ donor registry can bring their driver’s license for help getting signed up.
