Workshops and Youth Ensembles

Music, Theatre and Dance at OU offers community members an opportunity to participate in workshops on our spacious wooded campus in suburban Rochester Hills, Michigan. Our workshops are taught by our faculty and by guest performers and teachers.

These outstanding arts performance workshops combine an open and collaborative atmosphere with rigorous standards and excellent teaching.

Refunds will be given up to one week prior to the event date. Cancellations within one week of the event date will not be refunded.

  • Great Lakes Dance Festival - full refund given if written notification received by June 15, 2015. 50% refund issued if written notification received by June 30, 2015. No refunds considered after June 30th without medical documentation.

Join us at our annual Percussion Day where they will experience individual lessons providing feedback for Solo & Ensemble and workshops covering a wide range of percussion areas. This event has free admission!

Single Reeds Solo and Ensembles Workshop

High school students preparing for upcoming solo and ensemble festivals are invited to perform in clinics offered by clarinet professor George Stoffan and saxophone professor Jeffery Heisler.  Soloists and small ensembles are encouraged to perform for the class and receive feedback from Professors Stoffan and Heisler.

Piano Day

Students (ages 10-18) will enjoy a morning that includes a mini-private lesson with an Oakland University piano faculty member, a conduction session, and an electronic laboratory experience. Afternoon activities include a recital by Oakland University Piano Students and an honors recital by the morning participants. There will be three cash prizes awarded after the Honors Recital.

Jazz Workshop

Featuring Regina Carter and the OU Jazz Quartet: Miles Brown, bass l  Sean Dobbins, drums  l  Scott Gwinnell, piano l  Mark Stone, percussion. Ages 14 and up, non-traditional jazz instruments welcome! Enjoy a weekend of workshops, clinics, combo rehearsals and performances.

Piano Camp

The Piano Department at Oakland University is pleased to announce a Piano Camp for young pianists 10-17 years of age. Younger pianists will be considered upon recommendation of the faculty. Activities include solo and ensemble lessons, musicianship classes, and performance. Note: This camp is not for beginning piano students.

Dance Day

Our annual Dance Day will feature master classes and performances from faculty run companies, Patterson Rhythm Pace, Eisenhower Dance, Take Root, and Repertory Dance Company. It will be an exciting day of classes with lots of instruction and ends with an afternoon performance. Should you be interested in auditioning for admittance into our program beginning fall 2015, there will be opportunity to do that as well toward the end of the afternoon. Download the flyer here.

Honor Band members will be selected through director nominations . The deadline for nominations is Friday, September 25th. We hope to select at least one student from all schools that submit 2 or more nominations.
