Meaningful Participation Program

Every faculty member with a clinician focus that is a part of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is required to participate in the Meaningful Participation Program. The program assures the involvement of faculty members and the reporting tool allows faculty to document their contributions within the School of Medicine. There are two components to the program.

MPP Components

  1. Component 1 – Faculty Professional Development – 3 credits required. Professional development activities enhance the faculty member’s professional knowledge or their skills and abilities; such as conferences or workshops specific to medical education in a designated field of study.

  2. Component 2- Service Credits-9 credits required. Service activities include committee, community, professional, academic or educational service.

What is Meaningful Participation Program (MPP)?
The Meaningful Participation Program (MPP) enables the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine to assure the involvement of faculty members and enables OUWB faculty to document their contributions towards the School of Medicine.

Who is required to participate in the MPP?
Every faculty member with a clinician focus that is part of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is required to participate in the MPP.

What are the performance expectations for the MPP?
The Meaningful Participation Program consists of two components:
  • Faculty Development
  • Service

These components may be amended annually under the direction of the Committee on Appointments, Promotion and Tenure (CAPT) as outlined in the Bylaws.

Each faculty member with a clinician focus must:

  • Participate in the equivalent of three faculty development activities over the course of a three year period (appointment timeframe).
  • Obtain nine service credits over a three-year period.
  • To ensure the accurate crediting of activities and timely communication, each faculty member is asked to self-report his/her activities in the tracking tool provided by the School of Medicine on a quarterly basis.
  • Each faculty member must provide a commonly used e-mail address to the Administrator of the MPP

How are Faculty Required to Report Activity?

To ensure the accurate crediting of activities and timely communication, each faculty member is required to self-report his/her activities in the tracking tool provided by email from the School of Medicine on a quarterly basis. The email contains a link to the tracking tool with an automatic login to the site.

Note: The tracking tool cannot be accessed from this website.
The tracking tool is not intended to replace your CV. You are only required to enter the following in the reporting tool in order to meet your requirements and to maintain your faculty appointment:

The following criteria will be used to monitor activity. Suggestions for improvement should be submitted to the Faculty Affairs Coordinator at medfacaffairs@oakland.edu on the MPP recommendation form provided on the resource page of this website or to the appropriate Departmental Committee on Appointments, Promotion and Tenure.

Reporting Requirements for Faculty Development - Three (3) Activities

Each faculty member with a clinician focus is expected to complete three faculty development activities over a three-year period.

Activities May Include:

  • Center for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME) sponsored events or programs
  • Oakland University Center for Teaching and Learning seminars
  • Faculty development activities through a professional organization

Web based activities may also be of value. Because of the diverse nature of these activities, in general, a 1-2 hour seminar or lecture will count as 1 activity.

Reporting Requirements for Service - Nine (9) Service Credits

Each faculty member with a clinician focus is required to obtain nine service credits over a three-year period.

Service credits may be obtained though:

  • Local committee participation
  • Local educational activities
  • Service to outside and educational organizations
  • Service in the community
  • Authorship and presentations

How are Faculty Reappointed?

Faculty members who meet these requirements will be reappointed for another three-year cycle. Faculty members who do not meet requirements shall forfeit their faculty appointment within the School of Medicine. After six months, the School may consider a new application for appointment. At that time the candidate, in partnership with his/her department chair, must identify the specific scope of responsibilities and the anticipated contributions to the academic mission of the School. The candidate shall be appointed for a one-year term and be required to show progress toward meeting Meaningful Participation requirements. (1 Faculty Development Activity and 3 Service Credits). After the candidate has successfully completed the requirements for his/her one-year appointment he/she shall be re-appointed for a three-year cycle.

Who does Meaningful Participation apply to?
Meaningful Participation applies to each faculty member with a clinician focus.

Why am I reporting these activities?
To ensure the accurate crediting of activities and timely communication, each faculty member is required to self-report his/her activities in the tracking tool provided by the School of Medicine on a quarterly basis.

Will I lose my faculty appointment if I refuse to report my activities?

Faculty members who do not meet the meaningful participation criteria may be in jeopardy of losing their faculty appointment.

May I just send my CV for the School of Medicine to enter all of my information?
You are required to report your participation on the tool provided by Faculty Affairs?

Why can't I access the document from your website?
The tracking document was developed in a manner that embeds your log in into the email that is sent on a quarterly basis. This eliminates the need for you to create a login and password.

May I save the reporting tool to my desktop or under a new tab?
No, unfortunately, the tracking tool may not be saved to your desktop or a new tab.

Isn't this information tracked somewhere else?
Yes, some of the information requested is tracked in other databases. The tool is the only data collection instrument that provides a report of your MPP activities.

Can my department secretary or my office assistant enter this information for me?
The tool requires you to self-report your MPP activities through the email system. A department secretary or office assistant may only be assigned to one faculty member.

I can't locate the email that was sent to me, what do I do?

May I count faculty development/professional activities that I attended outside of Beaumont Health System or the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine?

Yes, Faculty Development Activities may include participation in activities sponsored by the School of Medicine Center for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME), Oakland University Center for Teaching and Learning seminars, and faculty development activities through a professional organization. Web based activities may also be of value. In general, a 1-2 hour seminar or lecture will count as 1 activity.
