Malli Barremkala, MD

Malli Barremkala
Dr. Barremkala joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in July 2014 as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences. He co-directs courses in Anatomical Foundations of Clinical Practice (AFCP) and teaches Anatomical Sciences to medical students. Dr. Barremkala serves on numerous OUWB School of Medicine committees. Prior to joining OUWB School of Medicine, he held faculty positions at Ross University, and Spartan Health Sciences University. Dr. Barremkala is a member of several international organizations including the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) and American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA). Dr. Barremkala’s research focuses on medical education with emphasis on developing techniques to enhance learning of anatomy. He also researches curriculum design and evolution methods. He has experience in Medical Instructional Simulation and has been working towards integrating anatomy with simulation. At a recent AMEE conference held in Prague, Dr. Barremkala presented a poster about how combined teaching of airway management with head and neck anatomy improves student performance on anatomy exams.

 

FME Project

Anatomy is one of the most challenging disciplines for first year medical students. They also tend to forget most of it before they start the residency program. Assessment is an integral part of teaching, learning and retention. Many medical educators believe that assessment drives learning. Dr. Barremkala is planning to enhance the assessment methods by incorporating progressive testing and integrated question and compare. With traditional assessment method Dr. Barremkala hopes to find that this kind of assessment can lead to enhanced anatomy learning and long-term retention.

Bhavinkumar Dalal, MD, FCCP

Bhavinkumar DalalDr. Dalal has been an active member of the Beaumont – Royal Oak, Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine department since 2013. He joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in 2013 as an Assistant Professor. Before joining OUWB, Dr. Dalal worked at the University of Mississippi and in the VA hospital of Detroit as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Dalal has completed his MBBS and residency in Internal Medicine in India. He completed Internal Medicine residency and Fellowship in Pulmonary Critical Care Sleep Medicine from Wayne State University, Michigan. Dr. Dalal has research interest for Medical Education projects. His research interests also include interstitial lung disease, sleep medicine and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Dalal serves as Respiratory Course Director for M1 and M2 students.

 

FME Project

Once teaching is twice learning. Developing innovative teaching methods is a constant need in the current era. There is always less time for teaching, and the amount of material to be taught is increasing day by day. Classroom didactic lecture can cover a good amount; unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to engage students for the entire span of lecture. Dr. Dalal is comparing and developing a mixed teaching method in which one lecture will be traditional classroom lecture followed by 2 think-pair-share lectures. He is comparing those 3 lectures with 3 traditional classroom lectures. For outcome of those two teaching methods Dr. Dalal will assess medical knowledge as well as students’ engagement during classroom time.

Suzan El Sayed, DVM, PhD

Suzan El Sayed
Dr. El Sayed joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in the fall of 2013 as an Associate Professor of Biomedical Science. In 2004, Dr. ElSayed received her PhD from Biomedical Sciences Department, School of Medicine, Creighton University Omaha, NE. Her thesis studied the expression and functions of parathyroid hormone related peptide in intramembranous bone formation in vitro. Dr. El Sayed completed postdoctoral research fellowships in bone biology where she studied the role of Hoxc8 in chondrocyte proliferation at University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). She continued her research training at University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). Dr. El Sayed studied the comprehensive imaging of osteocytes – the longest lived deeply embedded bone cells – and she also studied the dynamic processes by which collagen is assembled and organized into the extracellular matrix using time lapse imaging. 





FME Project

Dr. El Sayed is interested in pursuing her research in bone biology, as well as in medical education. Dr. El Sayed has presented a poster to the American Physiological Society Institute on teaching and learning conference. The poster was about a new interactive method named the “Read-Fill.” Approach, which will be introduced to medical students during didactic lectures. This exercise promotes active self-directed learning, particularly on threshold concepts. Dr. El Sayed also submitted an abstract to the American Physiological Society teaching section. Dr. El Sayed’s abstract describes novel approach to integrate an interactive dialogical teaching style, within a story-telling teaching style. The story telling incorporates dialogue with the students in a question-answer format. With this approach students will not only be able to build an educational relationship with the instructors but also will be encouraged to provide analytical thinking.

Celeste Farr, PhD, MPH

Dr. Farr has been a member of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine since 2012. Before joining OUWB, Dr. Farr worked at Henry Ford Health System, taught at the University of Michigan in the School of Public Health, and was an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University in the Department of Communication. She serves as a peer reviewer for numerous journals, MedEdPORTAL, and actively participates in the American Public Health Association. Dr. Farr represents OUWB as representative to the Commission to End Health Care Disparities (CEHCD) (within the American Medical Association), and serves on the Health Professional Awareness Education and Training Awareness (HPAET) Committee within (CEHCD). Dr. Farr serves as President of OUWB Faculty Assembly as well as on numerous OUWB committees and advises several Capstone student projects.

FME Project

Teaching medical students about diversity issues can be challenging because students are not often resistant to engaging the material and considering how social determinants of health impact the lives of their patients. Students may feel that they will not need this information in their medical specialty of choices or fail to see the relevance of the content. Dr. Farr is testing the effect of the inclusion of a physician panel, and a research paper on health care disparities, on medical student’s engagement with diversity content. The present hypothesis is that hearing the importance of diversity issues from practicing physicians and researching guided diversity topics, will increase student engagement and involvement with the diversity content in the curriculum.

 

David Hodge, MD

David Hodge


Dr. Hodge has been with Beaumont Hospital since his residency began in 1985. Dr. Hodge received his undergraduate and medical degree from Wayne State University. He has been an active member of the Beaumont-Troy OB/GYN department for the past 25 years. In March of this year Dr. Hodge became the first Medical Director of Laborists at Beaumont Hospital and now directs a team of 15 physicians in the day-to-day operations of labor and delivery at Beaumont-Troy. Dr. Hodge also has a part time private OB/GYN office serving the local community. His work in the medical education field includes 20 years as an OB/GYN clinical advisor to the Family Medicine Residency at Beaumont. Dr. Hodge is an Assistant Clinical Professor at OUWB School of Medicine. 


FME Project

Dr. Hodge’s project involves the development, testing, and implementation of a novel hand-held device application for medical student education. The aim is to provide an easy and accessible tool to promote a quick understanding of clinical OB/GYN concepts. This will assist medical students functioning within the OB/GYN department. Hopefully, this endeavor will lead to other applications that will improve education for both nursing staff and patients.

Serena Kuang, MD, PhD

Dr. Kuang joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in 2014 as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Science. Dr. Kuang earned an MD in China, a PhD in Education at Indiana State University, and a PhD in Neuroengineering at Clemson University. Dr. Kuang’s research interests include seeking a systematic approach to optimize a learner’s mental state to increase learning outcomes. Developing neuron-based biosensor on a microelectrode array platform using cultured animal neuronal networks. 

 



FME Project

How to improve learning outcomes has been a constant challenge for learners, teachers/educators, and school systems in all fields and at all levels. In the education field, tremendous efforts have been made to improve student achievement. Many of these efforts focus on optimizing a learner’s external factors, such as creating better learning environments or settings, taking a collaborative or interactive approach, implementing a variety of pedagogies, seeking better support from libraries and educational technology, and so on. As mind-body research increases, insight into developing the attitude of the mind to bring health, inner peace, efficient learning processes, good performance, and success has gradually drawn more and more attention. A growing body of research studies now focuses on the optimization of a learner’s internal factors, i.e., a learner’s attitudes toward various challenges to improve health conditions and to enhance learning outcomes. Dr. Kuang is taking the opportunity of the FME workshop to develop a curriculum that aims to optimize a learner’s mind setting holistically. This curriculum will be used in Dr. Kuang’s future research as an educational treatment to conduct some quasi-experimental studies to increase learning outcomes.

Gustavo Patino, MD, PhD

Dr. Patino joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in 2014 as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Science. Dr. Patino received his MD from Universidad Nacional de Colombia and was a neurology resident at Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota / Escuela Colombiana de Medicina for two years, both in his native Bogota, Colombia. He joined the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Michigan in 2004. After obtaining his PhD, Dr. Patino returned to Colombia and joined the Faculty of the Medical School at Universidad de los Andes. Prior to joining OUWB he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Patino’s research interests include basic and clinical neurosciences education, epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmias, ion channels, and computational biology. 

 

FME Project

Traditionally, people will review a subject they have previously learned, by focusing on rereading their notes or textbooks, or reading new materials. However, there is ample evidence in the education and psychology literature that the best way to review is to take tests on the subject, called "retrieval-based learning" or "testing-enhanced learning". Dr. Patino’s project will focus on examining the effect on clinical clerkship performance, by integrating repeated testing of the related basic science subject. Dr. Patino will take advantage of the close relationship that exists in terms of content between the neuroscience course (basic science) and the neurology rotation (clinical clerkship).

Manveen Saluja. MD, FACP

Dr. Saluja is a faculty member at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine. She has been a preceptor for medical students and medical residents from various sub-specialties since 1999. With a reputation as a respected diagnostician and clinician amongst her referring colleagues, she has maintained her commitment to clinical excellence throughout her career. Dr. Saluja has zeal for imparting medical knowledge and is an adept medical educator. Dr. Saluja joined William Beaumont Hospital in 1999 and has been passionately committed to teaching rheumatology students. She has actively engaged throughout her career in patient care activities. Dr. Saluja started a solo rheumatology practice and has been offering individualized patient care, with a focus on those suffering from musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Saluja co-authored a landmark study on membranous lupus nephritis with Dr. Joseph McCunne from University of Michigan. Dr. Saluja has a patent on Methods of Forming Monolithic CMOS-MEMS Hybrid Integrated, Packaged Structures in 2013. This patent allows for a method to effectively synergize advanced medical sensor functionality and finally package them creating a very cost effective, reliable, robust transduction system. She has volunteered for Arthritis Foundation Education Committee and Michigan State Medical Society Pain Task Force and has been awarded for the same. Dr. Saluja is currently volunteering for Human Investigating Committee at William Beaumont Hospital. She has mentored many medical residents, advised many start-up companies and volunteered her time to non-profits. Dr. Saluja is a motivational speaker and has spoken at interfaith conferences. 

 

FME Project

Dr. Saluja is interested in creating an innovative, online, self-paced interdisciplinary rheumatology medicine, and educational program. Her program would serve for medical students, and the Family Medicine/Internal Medicine residents who would like to have further rheumatology training.
