He joined Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) in 2016 as an assistant professor of Foundational Medical Studies. He co-directs courses in the Anatomical Foundations of Clinical Practice (AFCP) and teaches anatomical sciences to M1-M2 students. Dr. Gemechu serves on the OUWB Faculty Recognition Committee (Chair).

Dr. Gemechu received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Verona, Italy, and his B.Sc. in Biology and M.Sc. in Clinical Anatomy from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He attended health profession education courses at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. In Ethiopia, he served as a lecturer at Hawassa University and taught anatomical sciences to first-year medical students.

Prior to joining OUWB, Dr. Gemechu was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Wayne State University, where he taught and engaged in a research project that examines the characterization of dopaminergic system mechanism and published his work in a prestigious Journal, Nature/Scientific Reports. His research interest at OUWB primarily focused on basic and clinical anatomy: considerations of clinically relevant anatomy in surgeries; medical education: cultural attachment and emotional experiences of medical students; and pursuing research in the area of neuroscience (neuroinflammation, brain aging, and aging-related neurodegeneration).
